EAST END CRICKET CLUB SUMMER 1892 & 1893.

Prior to that summers cricket season, the East End Cricket club held a meeting on March 18th. 1892 at the Viaduct Hotel, Wilfred Street. Byker. Sadly, to date, only one match report from that summer has come to light; possibly due to the football clubs move to St. James Park & their change in circumstances. SUMMER 1893

A much more representative summer programmes of cricket matches were seen to be played by East End in the summer of 1893. Interestingly all known matches were played away. This is possibly indicating that the move from The Heaton Junction Ground to St. James Park., saw them remaining in the East of the City & without ha home ground any longer. This summer would be the last before the cricket club at East End folded.  So far 6 East End matches from the summer of 1893 have been found & documented. They had a successful season, winning 4 matches. They lost 1 & a drawn match was noted as ‘greatly in favour of East End. In bat, William Muir, Brown & White were the top hitters, while Dalrymple & Varty excelled taking the most wickets bowling. Alex H. White & R. Warren’s improving performances on the cricket pitch led to there involvement in the Northumberland County Trial Match in May 1893. Others to be involved at county level, who played for East End during that last summer; were Varty & Chard.

There match in early September 1893 with Howick is most likely the last played by East End Cricket Club. A club called Heaton Guild had begun playing matches that summer & by August a number of East End’s players began to be seen turning out for the. They were Joseph Dalrymple, George Warren & R. Warren  In the summer of 1884 East End Cricket Club were no more & had disbanded. Many of the players stayed playing cricket in the local Byker area & more of them joined the developing Heaton Guild Cricket Club. This club were also a football club whose players included W. Molineaux, who was also in the cricket club & was there secretary. (No involvement by ex East End FC has been found playing for Heaton Guild FC).

All those that are known to have turned out for the Heaton Guild Cricket club in the summer of the 1894 were as follows: C. Barron, Buchanan, J. Eden, J. Hobson, Othick, R. Varty, G. Warren, R. Warren, A.H. White, J. Dalrymple  & Woods.
