NEWCASTLE EAST END FC – 1884-85 SEASON

Season 1884-85 saw the club move ground again this time to land next to Dalton Street in Byker. It would remain their home base until the big move in 1886 to the Heaton Junction Ground. The clubs first senior team silverware in the form of the Northumberland Senior Cup Trophy was won for the first time in the clubs history against Sleekburn Wanderers . The victory led on to a match with the Durham Senior Cup winners Darlington for the original Northumberland & Durham Cup, which they lost. However they also played in & won the Northumberland Charity Shield defeating Newcastle FA. 10:0 in the final. This created a new highest score record for East End.  The club continued to feature in that summers Temperance Festival competition. A number of ex Newcastle Rangers players now joined the club. Three particularly influential ones were Alec H. White who would take over the captaincy from John Armstrong after this season. Robert Crawford who would later become the clubs secretary. Forward Thomas Hoban whose goal scoring prowess also progressed the standing of the club locally. Overall, the 1884-85 season saw East End grow in stature and challenge to become the top team in the North East. Reporting in the local press was becoming more detailed aiding the historian in documenting matches & below are details of the clubs fixtures at all levels, beginning with the first team.
