EAST END FC:  1886-87 SEASON REVIEW

The 1886-87 season saw the dawn of a new era for the East End club, with their move to the Heaton Junction Ground. This would become their new home until 1892 when they moved to their current home. The club would continue to improve & develop with their major local rivals West End being based at St. James Park. Alec H. White now captained the team, with the clubs secretary continuing to be Charles Gray of 43 Shields Road, Byker. To put things into perspective, the season would mark East End’s furthest journey to play so far, with a trip to the Scottish Border to play Berwick Rangers. They entered the Northumberland Senior Cup that season but were knocked out in the semi final. New faces to be seen in the first team that season, were goalkeeper William Chard, Stones from Gainsborough & Peter O’Brien. There also brief appearances from county cricketer James Chirnside, county footballer Sam Wood & Gateshead’s William Boswell. The folding of the Heaton club saw a number of their ranks such as Dan Lord & William Muir; join the East End fold. During this season the city’s oldest club Tyne Association folded. East End benefited by obtaining one of their players; J. Ferguson.  Before we have review of the club fixtures that season, the Heaton Junction Ground had originally been part of the land encompassed by the North Eastern Football & Cricket Clubs home ground.  The ground was referred to as Heaton Athletics pitch or bicycle track on occasion & its parameter included a cycle track; with its Southern end being close to the railway lines of the East Coast line & the junctions sidings.  East End’s season would begin in unusual fashion, with participation in the Elswick Works Athletic Sports 5-A-Side Competition in September. In early October they played West End to mark the opening of the St. James Park ground & then finally played their first home match at Heaton Junction on October 23rd against Darlington St. Augustine’s. The clubs junior obtained silverware by winning the Town Moor Temperance Festival Junior Compeition Final in June.
