During the whole of his football career, Co. Durham born Harry Gibbon was also a cricketer, who by the age of 16 was playing for Eppleton Cricket Clubs second team in the summer of 1922. Gibbon was born Henry, but was known to everyone in sporting circles as Harry. He was born in April 1906 in Lyon Street in the Hetton Lyons part of the Hetton Le Hole pit village, which is near the Co. Durham town of Houghton Le String. On leaving school Harry became a miner at his local pit & was also a warehouse worker. During that first summer of cricket action in 1922, Harry is known to have played in at least 4 Durham Senior League Division II matches for the 2nd. Team, with a likely debut in the side on August 5th.1922, win over Hendon’s 2nd. Team. The following summer saw Harry begin featuring for the clubs 2nd. Team & as the summer progressed he moved up to feature in the first team. There are 10 known 2nd. team appearances; including a last appearance at that level on July 28th hitting 30 runs in a defeat to Durham city 2nd Team. His debut in the senior side at Eppleton had been earlier that month on July 7th.1923; in a draw with Philadelphia. Although he did not get to bat he did take one wicket for 0 runs bowling. By the end of the 1923 summer, Gibbon had featured in 7 known, 1st Team matches, 6 of which were in the Durham Senior League; with the club completing their fixtures in 5th. place. He also played for the first team in a friendly against Hendon in a benefit match for J. Marshall. He hit 8 runs in the match, which they won by 8 wickets. Summer 1924, saw Harry really establish himself as a 1st team player in the side at Eppleton. After an uninspiring opening defeat to South Shields only hitting one run on May 17th, in the Durham Senior League; he went on to play in 11 known senior matches for the club. He hit his first half century plus that season, with a respectable 75 not out score on July 12th in a victory over Seaham Harbour. The club completed their league programme in 5th place in the Durham Senior League & in the batting averages from that league Gibbon was listed in 11th place. A highest score of 94 was recorded here & a total of 305 runs with a batting average of 27.72. This was from 12 match innings, meaning one match remained to be identified.

Details of Gibbon’s early football career are vague with his arrival at Newcastle in the summer of 1924 was noted in the local press as from being from local club Howden. However, during the 1923-24 season local press reports show a player called Gibbon played at Felling Colliery, but at left half. Further research is required to clarify if this was Harry or not. Later that season, a more likely player with the surname Gibbon also played for Houghton. This later player was more likely to have been Harry, especially as his position in the side was at outside right; Harry’s regular position. At the beginning of the 1924-25 season Harry Gibbon signed for Newcastle as a junior ‘Swift’ with Newcastle United & he quickly progressed into the reserves. Harry was first seen wearing the Newcastle shirt for the reserves making his debut in a 1:1 draw with Scotswood in a North Eastern League fixture. This would be the first of 16 appearances in the sides’ league fixtures. (Included in this total is an appearance in a league game with Seaton Deleval on January 2nd when the match was abandoned after 85 minutes with score at 1:1). He scored 3 league goals for the reserves in the campaign; the first of which was in a 1:0 win over Middlesbrough on October 4th; ‘scoring a fine goal in bad weather’. The next was on October 18th in a 3:0 victory over Chester-Le-Street; with the other goal, his last for a Newcastle side; being on November 29th in a 5:0 hammering of Seaton Deleval. The last known Newcastle reserve appearance by Gibbon was on March 18th when they defeated Jarrow 2:0 in the league, with side later completing their league programme in 3rd. place, behind Darlington & Sunderland reserves. Harry Gibbon also played for the reserves in 4 other cup matches, beginning with a Northumberland Senior Cup 1st round 5:0 victory over Scotswood on December 17th. He featured in the sides Newcastle infirmary Cup run, beginning with their 3:0 win over Gateshead High Fell on November 12th. He was then in the side in their semi final 1:0 win over West Stanley on February 11th & this was followed by his inclusion in the side that won the final tie against Shildon, 2:1 on March 14th. Gibbon’s one opportunity at senior level came in the first leg of the Ingham Infirmary Cup at St. James Park against South Shields on October 22nd. Newcastle lost 2:1, putting in a below par performance. Although they drew they 2nd leg without Gibbon in the side, they failed to claim the trophy. Prior to the start of the competitive season Harry Gibbon had also featured in 2 of Newcastle’s pre season practice matches, the first being for the Stripes against Whites on August 9th. but the score from the game is not known. Gibbon then featured in a ‘swifts’ practice match on August 23rd playing for a Whites XI that lost 1:0 to a Stripes XI. Actual Swifts line ups from that season are difficult to obtain; however Gibbon is known to have featured in at least one of their Tyneside League fixtures; on September 10th when they lost 1:0 to Wood Skinner’s.

The summer of 1925, saw Gibbon obtain his first of many County Cricket representative appearances for Durham. This was August 25th. in a Minor Counties win over Yorkshire 2nd. Team. In bat Harry scored 16 runs not out in the first innings. He featured in 2 further County minor counties league matches that summer. He also featured for Durham County against Cumberland on July 9th in a friendly which they won; a victory greatly assisted by his 84 runs. On May 25th he was selected for the side to play a Mid Durham League XI & hit 10 runs in that victory. Harry also got selected to play in one Durham County 2nd XI side that summer. This was on July 1st in match with Northumberland’s 2nd. XI, which they lost, with Gibbon hitting 22 runs.
For his club side, Eppleton, he continued to improve & played in 17 known matches assisting his side to gain the runners up place in the Durham Senior League. He hit 3 half centuries during the campaign, including 64 runs in bat in a draw against Hendon on May 23rd.Epleton came close to winner the Durham Senior :League title, with ending the summer as runners up. Gibbon featured in 18 match innings for Eppleton that summer hitting a total of 370 runs. That summer at cricket, Gibbon also turned out for A. L. Scott Owen’s XI in a benefit match at Philadelphia for J. Kirtley. The match ended in a draw. With the new football season about to commence, Gibbon moved to Bishop Auckland on a free transfer in August 1925. In his season with the Bishops, Gibbon was a regular in their side which finished 5th. in the Northern League. Gibbon’s Bishop Auckland debut came on August 29th on a Northern League 1:1 draw with Scarborough. This would be the first of 13 known league appearances, the last of which was on April 10th 1926 when they lost 4:2 to Willington. Gibbon scored in the game, the last of his 3 League goals for them. His other league goals for Bishop Auckland were on November 28th in a 7:1 defeat to Cockfield & in a 6:0 hammering of Stanley United on February 13th. Gibbon also featured in a further 13 cup matches for Bishop Auckland; including a goal in a 7:0 victory over Cockfield in a 1st Round tie of the Northern League Cup. He also scored in a Boxing Day 5:1 win over Chester-le-Street in the 1st Round of the Durham Challenge Cup. His other cup goal came in a 5:1 defeat Stockton in an English FA, Cup 1st Round tie on January 9th. In the 2nd Round of the Durham Challenge Cup Bishop Auckland once again faced Cockfield & after two draws, they progressed with Gibbon playing in all three ties. Gibbon then assisted the side to win their Semi Final match with Chilton Colliery 3:1 on March 20th & he was then very likely in the side that played in the final on May 1st & lost 1:0 to Shildon.

The summer of 1926 saw Gibbon really establish himself as a regular selection to represent Durham County. He started in 9 of their minor counties matches. His best showing in bat that summer for them was on June 21st, hitting 63 runs in a draw with Lancashire 2nd. There was also a further Durham County friendly match he took part in hitting 43 runs. This was on July 26th in a draw with Cumberland. Earlier that month on July 12th. he featured for a Durham County Colts XI against a Mid Durham League XII. They won this county trial match, with Gibbon obtaining 19 runs & bowling out 1 wicket for 1 run. An early indication of his potential as a fine bowler. Unfortunately at club level, Eppleton had a poor season despite Gibbon featuring in at least 12 known matches. Their season ended with them in bottom position in the Durham Senior League with only 18 points. Gibbon best batting total that season for Eppleton was only 28 runs, although some records indicate a highest score of 69 that summer. At the end of the summer, in August 1926, Gibbon signed for Sunderland AFC. Before kicking a ball for them he featured for a Sunderland AFC XI in a cricket match against the Sunderland Cricket Club. They only lost by 23 runs in a bold performance; which saw Gibbon hit 14 runs & bowl 1 out for 3 runs. Although he failed to gain any first team appearances, he did have a very successful season playing in the clubs reserve side. He is known to have played in at least 13 of the sides North Eastern League matches, from his debut on September 1st in a 2:1 win over Jarrow through to April 23rd when they drew 0:0 with Shildon. The side won the league title that season & outside right Gibbon scored 3 goals during the campaign. Two verses Middlesbrough Reserves on October 23rd in a 3:2 win & one in a 8:1 thrashing of Durham City Reserves on February 19th. Harry Gibbon also played in the reserves North Eastern League Challenge Cup 1st Round 6:0 victory over Newburn on December 16th. Although, Gibbon did not find first team action at Sunderland he now moved to join Notts. County were he did on 3 occasions. Gibbon’s debut came early in the season September 10th in a 0:0 draw with Southampton. This followed by an appearance on February 18th in a 1:1 draw with Reading & the last of his senior appearances them followed a week later on February 25th in a 3:3 draw with Blackpool. He played at outside right in all three league matches. No details have so far been located of any reserve matches at Notts. County & further research is required.

Summer 1927 saw both Eppleton & Gibbon have a much improved season, with Harry featuring in over a dozen league matches, with side ending the season as league champions in 1st. place. Gibbon hit 3 half centuries, the best pf which was 79 runs in a win over Wearmouth Colliery on July 9th. Bowling he managed to take 6 wickets for 43 in a win against Sunderland on July 6th; on a day when he also hit 42 runs. His excellent batting average at club level at the end of the season was 30.25 from a total of 363 runs. Bowling he had also done well with his average being 11.66, taking a total of 27 wickets for 315 runs in 107 overs. Eppleton also nearly claimed a trophy that summer, the John Saunders Cup. Gibbon featured in the 3rd Round victory over Gateshead Fell, hitting 17 runs on June 28th. He was also in the side in the final against South Shields on July 27th. They lost by a single wicket with Gibbon hitting 19 runs & bowling out 4 for 23 in the match. At County level there two more minor counties Durham appearances; in a win over Northumberland on June 6th & in a win over Yorkshire 2nd XI on June 22nd. Gibbon also featured against touring New Zealand side on June 27th hitting 10 runs; losing to a very strong national team eleven. On May 25th. Durham also played a H.G.G. Leveson-Gower XI in a drawn friendly match & Gibbon hit 13 runs in the first innings. The following summer of 1928 would be Gibbon’s last with Eppleton in what would be an average one for the club ending their Durham Senior League campaign in 6th. place. Gibbon appears to have only been involved playing for them until July, with his last appearance of the 9, being on July 7th. This was against Durham City & they won by 59 runs. Although Gibbon only gained 6 runs in the match he did take 5 wickets for only 19 runs bowling. His best batting performance of the summer with them was on May 12th when he hit 71 runs in a win over Hendon. In total for Eppleton, Harry hit 183 runs, while bowling from his 76.5 overs, with 21 miadens, he took 20 wickets for 142 runs. For Durham County his inclusion in the side was very frequent & he featured for them in 8 minor counties matches. On July 9th he hit 54 runs in a draw with Yorkshire 2nd & then on August 6th he hit 68 runs in a draw with Northumberland. Gibbon also featured for Durham in 3 other matches, against another Leverson-Gower XI, & in match against a touring national side. This was on June 1st when they gained a draw a West Indian side. On July 25th Durham also played first class county side Yorkshire & gained a very credible draw; with Gibbon hitting his first century for the county with a score of 108 runs in the first innings. His one other representative match involvement was on July 18th, featuring for a Durham Coast League XI against a Durham Colts XI, which they won by 62 runs. Later that summer Gibbon appears to have begun turning out for local side New Seaham Park. In cricket circles this ‘dropping down of the divisions’ for such a talented professional player, must have been a bit of a surprise. During the following summer, a number of New Seaham Park matches, featured Gibbon have been found. It was reported in the local press that Gibbon was appointed as assistant groundsman at New Seaham Park ion July 1928, which makes it more likely that later that summer he did play cricket for them, with side winning the Durham Coastal League.

On the football pitch, Harry Gibbon now joined Seaham Harbour FC at the start of the 1928-29 season & he made his North Eastern League Division II debut for them on September 8th.1928. This was in a  3:2 win over Walker Celtic. His first goals came on October 20th; hitting 2 goals in a 3:2 win over St. Peter’s Albion. Not all his appearances for the club that season are known & by 1929 he doesn’t appear to feature anymore for the club. There are 7 known league appearances for Seaham Harbour in which he scored 4 goals; the first 2 of which were claimed in a win over St. Peter’s Albion. He obtained the other goals in a 1:1 draw with Craghead United on November 26th. & then, in what looks to be his final appearance on December 1st; in a 1:1 draw with Chester-le-Street. Harry also featured in two cup ties for Seaham Harbour in a 6:2 defeat to Durham City in the Sunderland Shipowners Cup & then against a Newcastle reserve side on November 28th. Here they lost 2:0 in the 2nd Round of the North Eastern League Challenge Cup. From January 1929 onwards I have found no further evidence that Harry continued his football playing career & its possible he choose to concentrate his sporting efforts on the cricket pitch. However, Spen Black & White had a forward called Gibbon during the 1931-32 season & further research is needed to identify if this was Harry or not.  The summer of 1929 was Gibbons one full summer playing cricket for New Seaham Park, who were a Durham Coastal League side. Matches details from this lower level of cricket are difficult to obtain; but I have been able to confirm he featured in at least one league match & 3 cup matches. Two of these were in the John Saunders Cup; on July16th. in a semi final win over Seaham Harbour; hitting 51 not out & bowling 3 for 28 in a fine performance. In the final they faced a strong Chester-Le-Street side & despite his 66 runs in their innings, they lost by 5 runs. New Seaham Park won the Durham Coastal League that summer. Gibbon also featured for New Seaham in two friendly matches, one in a win over the South Northumberland club on June 15th. The other was against an XI from his old football club Sunderland & they lost on August 8th. Gibbon hit 13 runs & bowled out 2 wickets for 16 runs in the match. That summer the Eppleton Cricket Club held a benefit match from his old team mate Ellis & Gibbon took part in the H. C. Feren’s side, but unfortunately details from the match are not known. At County level there were a further 8 Minor Counties appearances added to his growing tally. There also further county appearances against a touring South African side which they lost on July 24th.1929 & on June 5th when he hit 81 runs in a draw with Leverston-Gowers XI. There was also a Durham Coastal League XI representative appearance on June 19th in a defeat to a Durham County 2nd. XI.

The summer of 1930, saw a return for Gibbon to Durham Senior League level of club cricket, with him joining Sunderland Cricket Club. He was now referred to as a professional & he had a tremendous first summer with him assisting the club gain the league championship. Gibbon made his debut at the Sunderland club on April 26th in a win over Chester-le-Street; assisting with a modest 11 runs. There 4 half centuries gained in bat in the league that summer for Gibbons with Sunderland & an outstanding 134 runs on June 28th in a victory over Philadelphia. His best bowling performance of the summer was on August 8th when he took 7 wickets for 32 runs in a win over Durham City. He is known to have played in 20 league & a further cup matches. By the end of summer season of 1930, his batting average of 825 runs from 20 innings, giving an average of 45.83 topped the Durham Senior League performance table. He also hit a tremendous 118 not out for Sunderland in a win over South Shields on August 23rd. His bowling average saw him in 6th place with 48 wickets for 660 runs from 268.4 overs; giving an average of 13.75. Guest appearances included featuring for a D. Hedren’s XI in a benefit match for E. Whitehead at Wearmouth Colliery. He scored 40 runs in his sides defeat to them. Gibbon was also a guest for a Colonel Turnbull’s XI in a benefit match at Chester-le-Street for Jack Carr. In this match against a F. Coulson XI, he hit 34 runs & bowled out 3 for 8. Durham called upon his services a further 9 times in minor counties cricket that summer, with his outstanding match being on August 18th. when her hit 98 not out in a 10 wicket victory over Staffordshire. He also took 3 wickets for 17 in the match. The following summer with Sunderland brought further Durham Senior League success, with the side almost claimed the title again, but finished runners up. He featured in 14 of the matches & hit a century of 112 runs on May 30th in a draw with Hendon; as a well as a 58 not out score in a 10 wicket win over Whitburn on August 22nd. Once again he claimed top spot in the Durham Senior League Batting averages table. hitting a total of 482 runs, gaining an average of 40.16. His bowling average got him 7th place; from 232.5 overs, gaining 38 wickets for 602 runs, giving an average of 15.84. The Sunderland club also had success at cup level, winning the St. Agatha Cup on July 31st. defeating a Sunderland & District League XV by 2 runs. His sides tally of 99 saw his contribution of 33 runs greatly assisting. On August 5th Sunderland also claimed the Sunderland Charity Bowl; easily defeating Boldon in the final. Gibbon claimed an innings of 58 runs in the match & bowled 4 for 50. There were 6 more Durham Minor Counties appearances gained, including a half century of exactly 50 in a win over Northumberland on August 3rd. He also played for Durham against a touring New Zealand national side on July 18th; hitting 34 runs in a match which ended in a draw. Two other notable guest appearances were for his old club Sunderland AFC on August 10th when they lost to Hendon Cricket Club, with Gibbon gaining 3 runs in a benefit match for W. Brown. He also featured for a Jenneson Taylor XI on July 14th.1931 in a match verses North Durham in a benefit match for W. Bateman.

The summer of 1932 was less successful for the Sunderland Cricket Club. However despite their 3rd. place finish there were still some memorable performances from Harry Gibbon. His 17 known league appearances, included a 95 runs innings in a draw with his old club Eppleton on June 25th, 80 runs in a in a draw with Wearmouth Colliery on June 11th, 75 runs in a win over Burnmoor on July 23rd, & 82 runs in a draw with Chester-le-Street on September 10th. Sunderland entered the Mid Week Cup that summer & reached the final. This was July 26th against Boldon & after an innings gaining 64 runs in a 152 for 7 total, rain caused an abandonment, as Boldon’s innings got underway. A replay took place on August 4th, but details from this are not known. From 18 match innings Gibbons total batting score for the club that summer was 592. Bowling from 264.3 overs, with 69 maidens; Gibbon took 39 wickets for 674. His numerous guest appearances that summer included featuring for a J.B. Bruce XI on August 5th verses a Spitty’s XI, but the score from this benefit match is not known. He also took part in match for the Sheriff of Newcastle’s XI against a Norman Whitfield XI & hit a commendable 96 runs in their victory. There were 8 Minor Counties appearances for Durham that summer. These included a 58 run half century on  July 20th in a victory over Lancashire 2nd XI. Overall he obtained Durham County 5th highest batting average with 380 runs, giving an average of 23.75. His bowling average at county level that summer saw him gain 7 wickets for 178 runs in 50.4 overs; giving an average 25.42. He also featured in a Durham County friendly match against a Leveston-Gower XI which ended in a draw on June 15th. During the summer of 1933 Sunderland continued their poorer run of form & they ended season down in 10th position. Gibbon himself, continued his prolific batting performances & gained another century of 104 not out on May 20th in a draw with Eppleton. He obtained another century of 121 runs on August 12th in a draw with Boldon. There were another 4 half centuries also gained in the league as a well as 103 century score in a friendly defeat to the ‘Rooks’ on August 2nd. Gibbon turned out again in a Sheriff of Newcastle XI hitting 46 runs in a defeat to Norman Whitfield’s XI on August 9th. Sunderland slumped to 10th in the league table that season 7 Gibbon scored a total of 621 runs from his 18 matches for them in the league.  Bowling Gibbon’s 207.2 overs, with 33 maidens yielded 22 wickets for 561 runs. At County level there were 8 minor county appearances for Durham. Here there was a near century innings of 96 scored on June 21st in a victory over Yorkshire 2nd XI. Harry also featured for Durham when they entertained a touring West Indian national side on July 29th. The match resulted in a draw, with Gibbon hitting a modest 4 runs. The following summer of 1934 would be Gibbon’s last with the Sunderland club. They improved their Durham Senior League form ending in 6th place. Gibbon featured in at least 17 of their matches. He hit 6 half centuries during the campaign, the best of which was an innings of 66 runs in a win over Boldon on May 19th. In the John Saunder’s Cup Gibbon also hit a score of 78 on June 6th against Burnmoor but bad light cause the match to be abandoned before the end. Sunderland did have some cup success regaining the St. Agatha Cup on August 1st, defeating Hendon. Gibbon scored 2 not out & bowled 1 for 34 in the match. From another 18 match club summer Gibbon hit a total of 689 runs & bowling his 252.5 overs, with 55 maidens saw him take 38 wickets for 656 runs.
Of his 8 further minor counties Durham matches, his 108 runs in comprehensively defeating Denbighshire. Gibbon also featured for Durham when they played the touring Australians on June 25th. They gained a commendable draw & Gibbon notched up 17 runs in the 2nd. innings.

Gibbon now returned to his old club Eppleton for the 1935 summer season. Gibbon featured in 20 of their league matches & they ended the summer in 6th. place. Following his return debut on May 4th. when they defeated Burnmoor, hitting only 13 runs he was soon clocking up half centuries again & in total made 6 half centuries, including a 92 not out innings win over Boldon June 6th. Harry Gibbon hit an enormous 139 runs not out; his highest ever score on June 1st. when they won Durham City in convincing style. Gibbons total league score in bat that summer was 795, with 3 not outs.
Bowling his 334.5 overs, with 63 maidens saw him take 69 wickets for 934 runs. Gibbon also assisted the club in a good John Saunder’s Cup including a win in the semi final on July 22nd when they beat Hendon by 7 wickets. Unfortunately details of the final are not known. For Durham County he featured in a further 8 minor counties matches & a friendly with a touring South African side. His best showing in bat for Durham was on August 19th hitting 67 runs in a win over Denbighshire. The following summer things followed a similar pattern; in what would be Harry’s last for Eppleton. He is known to have featured in 20 (of which 15 have been confirmed) & the side obtained a 6th. place in the league. Gibbon made a further 6 half centuries in bat; including another 92 not out innings in a win over Hendon on July 18th. Gibbon’s last summer with Eppleton saw him make 782 league runs from 19 matches of which saw far only 14 have been identified. Gibbon scored 36 runs in the match which was a draw. His 6 minor counties cricket matches for Durham included an innings of 98 in a draw with Lancashire 2nd on June 24th. He also featured for Durham in two other matches, against the touring India side on June 10th which they won & on August 21st against W. Angus XI, which his 55 runs assisting in them obtaining a victory.

Harry Gibbon now moved away from the North East & in the summer of 1937 he turned for Lancashire League side Bacup. He made his debut for the club on April 24th in a win over Enfield. He featured in 8 league matches for the side & one Worsley Cup tie, obtaining his highest batting score in his last game that summer. This was on July 31st hitting 49 runs in a win over Accrington.  The club themselves had poor season ending near the bottom of the league table in 10th place.
