PLAYER PROFILE

Richard Harker was born in Wardley, which is the Eastern area of Gateshead. The 1891 Census shows him living with his parents Adam & Ann,  then aged 7, at 4 Third Street, Wardley Colliery. Little is known of his early life prior to joining Newcastle. His first junior club was Swalwell & its likely that he worked at a local colliery. On August 17th.1903 he had a trial for Newcastle at a time when the club was rapidly growing in strength & becoming one of the top clubs in England. He featured in two of the clubs pre season practice matches at St. James Park for the Whites XI verses the Stripes XI. The score from the first is not known, but in the second one on August 29th they won 4:3:2 in a game which featured most of the first team squad & Harker scored one of the goals. He performances at inside right were impressive enough to land him a contract with club, but during his first season the youthful Harker began life at the club in the newly formed III’s. He first featured for them in a friendly opener against the ‘Rest of the League’ on September 3rd. They won 3:1. At this level on November 7th 1903 he made his competitive debut in a Northern Combination; 2:0 win over Walbottle. The side was very strong & many of the players would rise through the ranks for Newcastle & other clubs. He is now known to have featured in at least 14 Northern Combination League fixtures scoring 7 goals in the campaign. His first, were a brace on January 23rd.1904, when they beat Swalwell United 5:1. He also netted near the end of the season in a  convincing 7:1 victory over Chester Le Street on April 4th. The sides’ last league game on April 30th & was also against Walbottle. They hammered them 8:0, with Richard at inside left, to be crowned Northern Combination champions. They were already way ahead in the league table  prior to this match & played ‘The Rest of the Combination League XI’ in another friendly on April 25th. The won 3:2 & Harker bagged one of the goals. A mention should also be given to the III’s Combination match verses St. Anthony’s Northbourne on January 9th when they demolished the opposition with a 13;0 score line. Richard got one of their goals, in the second half.  The III’s entered the Mid Tyne Charity Shield & he featured on December 19th in their 2:0 win over Scotswood Villa in the 2nd Round. In the 3rd Round, they on February 6th.1904, they lost to Wallsend Park Villa. He scored the III’s goal from the penalty. However, the result was declared void for reaso9n not known & Newcastle went through. Harker was also in the sides semi final win over Tyne Vale in March. In the final the III’s faced Walker Parish. This took place on April 20th, with the score at 3:0 to the III’s, the game was abandoned due to darkness, as the game had kicked off too late. The replay saw an even more convincing display from the III’s  two days layer. They lifted the trophy with a 7:1 victory. Harker also turned out for the III’s in the Northumberland Minor Cup 4:1 won over Rutherford College Nomads on November 21st.  They lost 3;2 to Scotswood Villa in the next round in December. Richard Harker’s contribution to the NUFC III’s success that season had not gone unnoticed & he given 2 run outs for the ‘A’s, which were the reserves of their day. Both were friendly matches & the first was on February 13th 1904. The game against a strong Sunderland ‘A’s ended in a 2:2 draw. His run out at that level was on March 12th against Rutherford College. They won 6:1 & Harker got himself on the score sheet.

Season 1904-05 saw Richard Harker now progress asa regular for  the ‘A’s (Reserves) squad pushing for place in a first team which was now challenging to win the league title during Newcastle’s most successful era in their history. His season at the club, kicked off in the usual manner with the pre season practice matches. He featured in two of these, with the later on August 27th.1904, playing for the Stripes against the Whites in a 3:2 win, scoring 2 goals in the game. The ‘A’s warmed up for the season with a friendly match against Rutherford College on September 10th. They won 5:2 & Harker scored. The ‘A’s Northern League campaign was under way when Harker made his competitive debut in the side was one September 3rd 1904 against Darlington St. Austine’s ‘A’. They won 1:0. Not all of his appearances in that season’s campaign are known, but of the 17 league appearances he is known to have made; his goal ratio was astounding. He scored 16 league goals, the first of which came on October 22nd, scoring twice in a 6:1 thrashing of Grangetown Athletic. On April  29th 1905 the side gave West Hartlepool a 7:0 thumping & he scored his last goal of the campaign in the game; as the side lifted the Northern League title. He featured in their semi final 6:2 win over Morpeth Harriers on February 11th.1905 & in the final when they defeated Wallsend Park Villa 2:1 at St. James Park on March 4th. Because of the strength of the first team, Richard Harker was given only one run out in the first team. This was in a friendly challenge match against the famous amateur side The Corinthians on January 3rd 1905. He featured at inside left in a closely fought game, which Newcastle lost 2:1. Harker also turned out for the ‘A’in 2 end of season friendly matches; on April 5th for Bob Pages Benefit match which was a 1;1 draw with Middlesbrough & on April 25th verses a Wearside League XI\; scoring both Newcastle’s goals in a 2;2 draw.
