 PLAYER PROFILE

John Donnelly first appearance at Newcastle in the pre season of the 1918-19 season. At this point the effects of the Great War continued to suspend the national league system & Newcastle’s first team continued to only play friendly matches. However, John was one of many local amateurs who joined the club as a ‘Swift’ having successfully impressed in a ‘swifts’ public practice trial match on August 24th. 1918. Featuring at outside right, he was in the Stripes XI that defeated the Whites XI 1:0 at St. James Park. A week later on August 31st. he made his first team debut in a war time friendly tussle against Sunderland. The match was to raise war funds & Newcastle won 1:0. On September 7th, Donnelly made his competitive ‘Swifts debut; playing in their Newcastle & District United League 3:1 defeat to Smith’s Docks. This would be the first of 12 known appearances in the swifts league campaign which saw them complete their fixtures in 6th. place. John’s last known appearance in the season was on April 16th. 1919 when they drew 2:2 with Palmer’s Jarrow. Donnelly bagged 3 goals for the side during the season; on October 5th. he got one in a 4:0 victory over Newburn Grange & 2 in a 4:3 win over Hebburn Colliery on November 2nd & he played mostly on the left wing. Donnelly also played for the Swifts in their two Tyne Charity Shield, on November 30th. when they beat Pandon Temperance 3:1& then in their 2nd. Round 1:0 defeat to Walker Celtic on January 11th.1919.

His performances sufficiently impressed for his to be called yup to the first team which had now been quickly reassembled with guest players to play in the mini local league which began in January 1919 & was called the Northern Victory League. Donnelly crowned his debut in the side on January 18th; with a goal in the sides 3:2 win over Scotswood. He featured in 5 of the leagues short programme, including assisting the side to an exiting 4:3 win over Sunderland, on January 25th. Having played on the left wing in the games, for his final appearance in the side; as the season drew to a close, saw him switch to left back. This was April 26th. when they defeated Darlington Forge Albion 4:0. The club ended the mini season in 5th. place, having battled for a place on the wing with first team player Ed Cooper. His involvement however was not over & John Donnelly also got to play for the first team in 2 further friendly matches. These were on April 29th when they beat South Shields 1:0 & then on May 3rd. when they drew 2:2 with Middlesbrough.

Unfortunately, the season would be the climax of a relatively brief career & with return of the full league programme & a greatly strengthened Division I Newcastle team, he failed to gain a further first team appearance. He did appear in 2 pre season public practice matches at St. James Park on August 20th & August 23rd; when he featured at left back for ‘Whites XI’ sides which lost 2:1 & 3:1 to the Stripes. He is noted as having been signed on as a professional, but competition was intense & he featured only as a reserve that season. reserve cup appearance that season. This was on October 11th. 1919, when the reserves made a disappointing showing in the 1st. Round of the Newcastle Infirmary Cup; losing 4:2 to Wallsend. He did however, score a rare goal for a Newcastle side during the game. In the reserve team’s North Eastern League campaign he played in defence in at least 4 matches; beginning with a 2:2 draw with Blyth Spartans on August 30th. His last appearance in side seems to have been just into the New Year on January 2nd. 1920; featuring in their Northumberland Senior Cup 1:0 win over Wallsend.

On May 27th. 1920, John William Donnelly was given a free transfer to local side Leadgate Park to carry on his playing career reverting to being an amateur player. He made his debut for them on August 28th in a NE. League 0:0 draw with Houghton Rovers. This would be the first of 26 known appearances in Leadgate’s  league campaign which saw them end the season in 13th. place; on May 7th against Blyth Spartans with Donnelly now more often seen at right back. The club two great cup runs that season, firstly in the North West Durham Charity Cup. Here Donnelly assisted the side in defeating Consett Celtic 2:1 on September 15th, before facing West Stanley in final. This was held on September 22nd against West Stanley & ended in a 2:2 draw. The replay on October 6th was a further draw, 1:1 & then on October 20th. they won the 2nd. Replay 1:0, with Donnelly at right back. The clubs other cup run came in the Durham FA. Senior Cup, with Donnelly featuring in the following ties. In the 1st Round on December 11th they thrashed Shildon 6:1 & then they beat Consett Celtic 2:1 on January 22nd.1921. In the 3rd Round they faced tough opposition in the form of Darlington & they drew 0:0 on February 5th. No team details are known of the replay but they reached the semi final to play Sunderland Reserves. The match on March 12th saw them win through to the final with a 1:0 victory. The prestigious final against Hartlepools United took place on April  2nd at Roker Park, but ended in stalemate 1:1. The replay four days later on April 6th. was held at Darlington, & the underdogs Leadgate Park won 2:1 afterextra time. Thus Donnelly & his team mates claimed the trophy.

Season 1921-22 Would be John Donnelly’s last with Leadgate Park & after he regularly in their North Eastern League campaign from their opener on August 27th; when they defeated Seaham 1:0, through until the end of year. His last game in the side was on December 31st when they drew 1:1 with Jarrow; bringing his known league tally for the season 12. Information from football at this level from this time is scarce & it is not known if at this point he was badly injured, or if he retired despite his relatively young age. It could also be that he moved away either with work or transferred to another club. Further research will hopefully solve this problem. Also that season before leaving Leadgate Park, Donnelly played in the sides FA. Cup 4th. Qualifying Round 3:0 win over Esh Winning on November 19th; making a rare change of position to right half. He also featured in the sides Durham FA. Senior Cup 1st Round & replay against West Stanley, which after a 1:1 draw on December 10th, they won through 2:1 on December 14th.
