PLAYER PROFILE

Leadgate born Benny Craig progressed through the junior ranks of a number of local clubs before progressing to play for Eden Colliery in 1932. At this point of his life; on leaving school; he worked as brick moulder in the nearby town of Consett. During his time there, he had trial with both Arsenal & Sunderland before being signed as an amateur for Huddersfield Town on January 6th.1934. His first action for the club was to play for the reserves on January 13th. at right back; in his sides comprehensive 6:0 Central League win over Leeds United. He is known to have at least once more for the reserve side that season on March 31st in a 2:1 defeat to Bury. He was also found in at least one Huddersfield ‘A’s side on February 17th.1934 when they defeated Selby Town 4:0 in the 2nd Round of the Yorkshire Cup. It was at the end of the season on April 28th that the club not only took the step retain him, but signed him as a professional. A week later on May 5th.1934 Benny made his senior debut for the club in a 3:1 league win over Birmingham City. He began the following season playing regularly for the reserves until February when he got a call up into the first team to play in a 3:1 league win over Leeds United. He quickly cemented his place in the right back position & by the end of the season had featured in 16 league games; assisting Huddersfield Town to finish in 16th. place in Division I. Victory’s included a 6:0 hammering of Blackburn Rovers on April 13th. The last game that season them lose 2:0 to Stoke City on May 4th.

The 1935-36 season saw Huddersfield challenge strongly for the title, only to settle for 3rd place. From the opening 1:0 win over Preston North End on August 31st through to a 1:0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on May 2nd; Craig made 37 league appearances. Benny also featured in two FA. Cup matches that season; on January 11th when they defeated Aston Villa in the 3rd. Round & then on January 25th. when they lost their 4th Round tie to Tottenham Hotspur 2:1. Huddersfield Town’s league formed dipped again the following season & they dropped to 15th place by the season’s end. Benny had begun the season as first choice at right back from their opener on August 29th when they drew 1:1 with Preston North End. As the season progressed, he drifted out of the first team line ups but still managed to clock up a further 18 Division I appearances. His last first team game that season was on December 26th, in a 4:2 win over Preston. The following season saw Benny Craig bounce back into the being selected ahead of others as first choice at right back in the side. Their league form remained static with a 15th. place finish. Benny featured in 25 of the matches from the opening 3:1 victory over Blackpool on August 28th.1937 through to May 7th when they defeated Manchester City 1:0. That season turned out to be Benny’s greatest at Huddersfield as the club had a fantastic FA Cup which saw them reach the final at Wembley. Benny’s first involvement was in their 4th Round 1:0 win over Notts. County on January 22nd.1938. He then featured in the 5th Round 1:0 win over Liverpool on February 12th. In the Quarter Finals they faced York City & with Benny at right back the game ended in a 0:0 stalemate on March 5th. The replay was held only days later on March 9th & they won 2:1. In the semi final they defeated a strong Sunderland side 3:1 on March 26th to reach the final were they were lined up to face Preston North End. It took place on April 30th & unfortunately Huddersfield lost the closely fought match 1:0; but only after extra time.

Season 1938-39 would be Benny’s last with Huddersfield Town, & it began in pre season with a very rare goal. Huddersfield Town had a practice match on August 13th. Here he featured for the Reds against the Blue & Whites & got the only of the game, playing in the advanced role of inside left. Sadly from the very opener he was back with the reserves. He featured in at least 7 known Central matches from August 27th when they drew 1:1 with Blackpool through to October 1st. when they lost 3:1 to Chesterfield. A week later on October 8th Benny Craig made one final senior league appearance for Huddersfield Town. This was in 1:1 draw with Aston Villa. In total Benny had featured in 106 league & 8 FA. Cup first team games for the club. On November 17th.1938, Newcastle paid a fee of £4 000 for him to bring him back to the North in an effort to improve their poor Division II form. Two days later on November 19th he made his debut in his customary right back role, but it was not to be a happy opener for him as they lost 3:0 to Blackburn Rovers. He did gain a regular place in the side as their was opposition for places, but by the end of his first season at Newcastle he has clocked up 9 league appearances assisting the side to a 9th place finish. His last senior competitive outing that season was on April 29th when they defeated Luton Town 2:0. Benny also got to feature in two end of season friendly matches. The first was on May 6th. when they lost 4:1 to Barnsley in a benefit match for Asquith. The other was play Grimsby Town for the Grimsby Hospital Cup on May 8th & they lost 3:2. Benny is known to have made at least 7 appearances for Newcastle’s reserves as well that season, as they battled to a 12th place finish in the Central League.

In the pre season Benny got a first team run out against Gateshead in a 3:0 win on August 19th. On August 26th 1939 the new football season got underway & Newcastle, lost 2:0 to Millwall. On August 31st they lost again 2:0 to Nottingham Forest. Finally on September 2nd Newcastle then hammered Swansea Town 8:1; all with Benny at right back. At that point the side were 14th in the league table; then World War II led to the suspension off all league football. For a number of weeks only friendly matches were played, the first of which was on September 23rd & they drew 2:2 with Leeds United. After a 3:2 win over Middlesbrough on October 7th; the last of these was on October 14th when they lost 4:0 to Preston North End, all with Benny in defence. On October 21st the hastily formed North Eastern Regional War League commenced & Newcastle’s opening game was Hartlepools United & they won 2:1. In their next game they hammered York City 9:2 on October 28th. In these matches & few other during the campaign Craig featured at left back & in total he played 19 of their league games. The season ended for Benny on June 8th. 1940 when they defeated Leeds United 3:1 & they finished as runner up for the title. Benny also featured in 7 War League Cup matches for Newcastle that season, beginning with a 2:0 defeated to Bradford Park Avenue on April 20th; in a 1st Round 1st Leg tie. The side progressed  with a 2nd Leg 3:0 win on April 27th. In May they knocked out Middlesbrough over two legs & then defeated Bristol Rovers 1:0 on May 18th. In the 4th Round on May 25th. it was Blackpool who they put out with a 2:0 win to face Blackburn Rovers in the Semi Final on June 1st. Unfortunately Benny & the rest of teams cup run came to an end when they lost 1:0. Prior to the season ending the club also played Sunderland twice in friendly matches, bringing Benny’s total that season to 17. In the first game Newcastle won 2:0 on March 30th & then on April 13th they won 3:2. That season also saw Craig  gain an English Football League Representative appearances. This was on March 2nd.1940 verses a British XI, and resulted in a 4:4 draw at Bradford Park Avenue.

The 1940-41 season saw the nation gripped by the war. Newcastle featured in the North Regional War League & Benny notched a further 18 appearances. Benny first featured on August 31st. in the sides 2:0 defeat by Bradford Park Avenue & his last showing was on February 1st. 1941 when they defeated Middlesbrough 6:2. The side completed their league programme in 10th place. Benny also featured in two further first team games. On December 21st in a 3:1 friendly win over Sunderland & then on March 1st in a Football War League Cup 2nd. Round 1st Leg 1:1 draw with York City. Benny Craig served with the army in the Royal Artillery during World War II & he was involved in active served in the Mediterranean. He was awarded the :Military Medal’ for his involvement landings at Anzio. His involved for Newcastle on the football front was very limited during the 1941-42 season & he only featured in one Football War League (North) game for the side. This was on December 6th. in a 7:0 trouncing of Middlesbrough. He also played on February 28th in a 1:1 draw with Middlesbrough in a Qualifying Round of the Football War League Cup. During that season Benny was a war time ‘guest’ player for Chelsea. (Details To Be Added)…
In November 1943, Benny was selected to play for a British Army XI against a Combined Services XI. The captain the side for the game which was played in Belgium. It was not until the end of final season of wartime football that Benny Craig returned to play football for Newcastle. Despite the nearing of the end of the war many restrictions on life remained & the 1945-46 season was nearing its completion Benny returned from service to Tyneside. His first game back in the first team was on April 3rd. when they played Blackpool at Workington in the final of the Cumberland Cup & lost 1:0. On April 6th he returned to Football War League (North) action in the sides 3:0 victory over Leeds United. This would be the first of 4 games in the campaign the last of which was on April 19th.1946 when they lost 1:0 to Manchester United. Newcastle’s season ended in a respectable 6th. place finish. In May Benny was involved in a further 3 friendly ‘Scandinavian Tour’ matches against foreign opposition. The first was on May 17th when they defeated Frigg 6:0, then on May 21st they lost to Norrkoping, 5:0. Finally they lost to a Hammarby XI, 1:0 on May 22nd. Prior to his return to Newcastle  on February 3rd. 1946 Benny got to represent a British Army XI again This time, the game  played in Naples was against a RAF XI. The score from the game is not known. During the war Benny served in the Army with the Royal Artillery. He saw action in the Mediterranean, including the landings at Anazio & he was honoured with the Military Medal.

Season 1946-47 saw the return of the full national league programme. & Newcastle began the job of building a side that could push for promotion back to Division I. The side kicked off their campaign in style with a 4:1 victory over Millwall. This would be Craig’s first of 14 league appearances & his last on June 7th.1947 saw the side end the season in a strong 5th place; despite a 4:2 defeat to Newport County. The score was in contrast to Newcastle’s 13:0 demolition of them earlier in the season in a game which Benny played no part in. Benny also played an active part in the clubs reserve team that season & clocked up 23 Central League appearances (Details of which are not known). The following season was very successful for both Benny & the club as completed the season in runner up spot in Division II & gained promotion back into ‘top flight’ football. They got the season underway with a convincing 6:1 win over Plymouth Arygle. Benny featured here & in a total 26 league games, beginning the season at right back, but switching to left back for most of his appearances; the last of which was May 1st when they defeated Millwall 1:0. Benny got to play in the sides FA. Cup tie that season against Charlton Athletic on January 10th which they lost 2:1. Benny. He also featured in 3 first team friendly matches; including at least one on their end of season tour of Ireland. This was May 10th when they defeated Shelbourne 6:0. Top flight football, with the squad getting ever stronger, saw Benny struggle to keep his place. Season 1948-49 saw him gained a further 10 senior league appearances all in the opening two months of the campaign. In all matches he played at left back, beginning with the sides 3:3 draw with Everton on August 21st. His last showing that season was on September 25th in a 0:0 draw with Manchester City & his other playing experience that season was at reserve level. The club went on to finish 4th in the league & then toured Canada & the USA. Benny got play in two of the high scoring games, on May 28th.1949 when they defeated Saskatchewan 13:2 & then in a club friendly record 16:2 win over Alberta All Stars on June 1st. He also featured in at least 2 other games including an 8:1 hammering of British Columbia on June 7th. & 4:0 win over Kamaterna of Sweden in Toronto on June 15th. The 1948-50 season would be ‘veteran’ Craig’s last in senior football at Newcastle. He made a further 7 appearances in the side all in the league & again the earlier part of the season. The first of these was on August 20th when they lost 1:3 to Portsmouth & his very last senior competitive game was on September 10th. This was in a disappointing 6:3 defeat to Charlton Athletic.

In June 1950 he retired from professional football but did continue to assist the ‘A’s during the 1950-51 season. Sadly no details of actual appearances are known. In May 1950, in a friendly against Ayr United, Craig turned out for Ayr in a match which Newcastle won 2:1. His main role now at the club, however now became as Junior Team Trainer / Coach for the side which featured in the Northern Intermediate League. Under his guidance he got the side off to a great start with a 9:0 friendly win over Annfield Plain Juniors on August 23rd. This was followed up with 10:0 hammering of Backworth on September 5th. The sides opening game of their league campaign was against Stockport County on August 30th. in a game which ended in a draw. It was not long before Benny was leading his junior side to honours & at the end of the 1952-53 season they were runners up in the Intermediate League. During his reign they would win it on three occasions 1956-57, 1967-68 & 1970-71 after a play decider winner. They were runners up a further twice in 1963-64 & 1966-67. They had even greater success in the Northern Intermediate League Cup winning the trophy 8 times, being joint holders once & they were also finalists a further once. There first success with Benny as trainer was in August 1954, with the final for the 1953-54 being played at the start of the following season. Benny Craig’s youth team also had success in  both the Amsterdam, Rotterdam & Paris Youth Tournaments. During his reign Benny also assisted the ‘A’s as manager during the 1951-52 season & they were runners up in Aged Miners Cup. He also assisted Norman Smith’s 1st Team during the 1955-56 season & this including their participation in the Charity Shield, in August when they lost to Chelsea. However, Perhaps his biggest legacy as a Trainer for Newcastle was the Juniors in the FA Youth Cup winning season. It was under his guidance undoubtedly came during the 1961-62 season when they reached the final of the FA. Youth Cup & defeated Wolves in the final over two legs. Assisting in the development of players such as Bob Moncur, Frank Clark  & many more & winning the Northern Intermediate League & Cup on a number of occasions. Benny Craig remained in this role until the mid 1970’s when he stepped down & later took on the role as club physiotherapist. He remained with the club in that capacity right up to his death, when he sadly passed away on January 18th 1982 in Newcastle.
