PLAYER
PROFILE

Wilfred Innerd began his football career with local Northern Alliance side Wallsend Park Villa; signing for them in the pre season of `1898. He made his debut on September 10th  in their first league match of the season. This was against Sunderland ‘A’ in a 2:2 draw; featuring at Centre Half. Reporting of Park Villa matches was patchy in the local press & he also appears to have had a period of time out of the side. However, I have  managed to find 6 league appearances, with the side ending their season in 8th place. His appearances did include playing against Newcastle’s ‘A’s in a 4:1 defeat on October 1st. The following season Wallsend Park Villa had a good run in the FA Cup making it through to the 4th Qualifying Round, before being beat 3:2 by Jarrow on November 25th. He began the season in their opening game now at centre forward against Jarrow on September 2nd. In total he is known to have featured in 6 league games & 3 FA Cup matches. He scored at least 3 Northern Alliance goals, beginning with a goal on February 3rd 1900 in a 2:0 victory over Gateshead NER. He also netted on March 3rd in a 4:1 win over South Shields & on April 9th in a 2:2 with Newcastle’s ‘A’s. The side ended the season an improved 5th place & Innerd performances were getting him noticed & in a month Innerd was signed by Newcastle in May 1900 from local side Wallsend Park Villa. His first taste of action on moving to Newcastle, was his inclusion in their customary pre season practice matches at St. James Park. He featured in 2 of these; on August 14th for the Whites in a 3:1 win over the Stripes & then on August 17th in a 1:0. As a reserve in the ‘A’s during his first season at St. James, he obtained his first honours in the Northumberland Senior Cup. He was first in their side on December 1st when they defeated Walbottle 9:0 in the 1sT Round. He also featured in their 2Nd Round 3:2 victory over his old side Wallsend Park Villa on January 5th; & then 2 weeks later on January 19th when they met Morpeth Harriers in the semi final, winning 4:0. The final on March 2nd against Seghill roved a very one sided affair & Newcastle’s reserve side including Innerd at right half, scoring a resounding 7:0 victory.  His performances earned him a first team call up & he made his senior debut at the club on March 30th.1901. Things did not go well that day, with Newcastle losing 3:0 to Liverpool in a Division I fixture. On April 27th as the season reached its climax, Innerd got another first team opportunity & he featured in the sides 0:0 draw with Bury. He was a regular in the ‘A’s successful Northern Alliance campaign. Although not all line ups are known from that far back campaign, he is known to have featured in at least of that season league games, including the sides 6:0 win over Middlesbrough ‘A’ on December 26th.& & 7:1 hammering of Stanley on March 16th. The side completed their fixtures on April 27th with a 3:3 draw with Willington Athletic, assisted by Wilf & finished champions.  Three days later on April 30th. their was still time for one last piece of action that season when he featured; in his last of 7 ‘A’s friendly matches that season. Here the ‘A’s travelled to South Shields Athletic to play in P.Taylor’s Benefit Match & they lost 3:2. Further research is needed in the ‘A’s for 1901-02, as they joined the Northern League & its likely Innerd assisted them in this campaign. He failed to gain any further first team experience that season. After featuring in a further two pre season public practice matches in August, it is known that he featured for the ‘A’s in a Tyne Charity Shield Semi Final tie on April 18th. when they beat Willington Athletic 1:0. He also played for ‘A’s in 4 of their friendly games, including a 4:1 win over Ayr Parkhouse on November 16th when he scored one of the goals. The last of these friendly matches that season took place on April 26th when they defeated Scottish outfit Carfin Ennitt 2:0.

Season 1902-03 continued in a similar vein for Wilf, who remained a regular in the sides ‘A’s & he once again got involved in the clubs pre season practice matches. His first was on August 20th, playing for the Stripes in a 1:0 win 7 this was followed by a Whites XI 4:1 defeat to the Stripes. The ‘A’s had a successful Northern League campaign & claimed the title & Innerd’s first involvement in the campaign was on September 6th when they defeated Crook Town 4:0. It is most likely that he played in many of the matches, but it will require further research to gain the exact details & his last known involvement of the campaign was on March 21st when they beat Bishop Auckland 4:0 on March 21st.  He assisted the ‘A’s in at least one Northumberland Senior Cup match that season when they beat Shankhouse 4:0 in the 1ST Round on January 3rd.  Here he got himself on the score sheet again., despite right half defensive role. The ‘A’s featured in several Tyne Charity Shield matches as well that season & Innerd is known to have played in 5 of these fixtures, beginning with \ 3:1 win over Mickley on September 10th; & culminated in a  win over Wallsend Park Villa on April 10th. His performances for the ‘A’s that season led to his selection in a representative Northern League XI on April 14th. Here they defeated a Northern Alliance XI 2:0. Soon after on April 29th. the ‘A’s league champions side crowned their season by playing a Rest of Northern League XI side & won 3:2. This friendly was his last of 5 for the ‘A’s that season & also included a 4:1 won over Blackpool on November 1st & a 1:0 win over Grangetown on December 20th; in a match which abandoned after 70 minutes.

During the 1903-04 season, after his customary two appearances in the clubs pre season practice matches, he continued as a regular for the ‘A’s in another successful Northern League campaign. He featured in many of their line ups including an impressive 8:1 win over Crook on November 21st & an 8:0 hammering of Darlington on December 19th. Some team details especially in the second half of the season are not known; however, it is known that he featured in the sides 2:0 win over Sunderland ‘A’s on April 1st as they headed for the title; scoring one of the goals. He also got on the score sheet, claiming more silverware as the ‘A’s regained the Northumberland Senior Cup. The final took place on February 27th & the ‘A’s defeated Willington Athletic 2:1. In addition to his further successes at reserve level, Innerd got a further call up into a first team line up. This time it was in a prestigious friendly on December 30th against the Corinthians & they won 4:2. The ‘A’s once again also played in a number of friendly challenge matches & Wilf played in eight; including a 10:1 trouncing of the 18th. Hussars on April 23rd.1904. Just prior on April 20th they were held to a 3:3 draw, by a representative Wearside League XI. His final, action of the season was the sides final friendly on April 30th when they beat Morpeth Harriers 4:2. During that season Wilf had also assisted local non league side Elswick St. Aidan’s ‘A’ & played in goal for them on two occasions.

The 1904-05 season would be Wilf Innerd’s final season with Newcastle & he did get one further piece of first team action, with his final senior appearance for Newcastle being on April 1st 1905 when they lost 2:0 to Blackburn Rovers in the league. Prior to this after 3 pre season practice match run outs, Wilf assisted the ‘A’s to yet another Northern League title. He is known to have played in his familiar right half role in at least 16 matches, & an early triumph w as when he assisted the side to a 3:0 victory over Sunderland ‘A’ on September 24th. He also featured in a convincing 6:1 victory over Grangetown on October 22nd & a 7:0 hammering of West Hartlepool as they clinched the title on April 29th. This game was possibly his last game for the club. Innerd was also in the side when they once again did the ‘reserve double’ & won the Northumberland Senior Cup. He most likely featured in the sides 1st Round win over Hexham in December, before assisting then to win the 2nd Round tie against Willington Athletic 3:2 on December 31st. In the semi final they defeated Morpeth Harriers easily 6:2 on February 11th & then in the final on March 4th & they defeated his old side Wallsend Park Villa 2:1. Wilf’s other involvement for the ‘A’s that season was to play in 3 friendly games that season. The Newcastle United first team at that time was among the best in the country & to gain first team football, Innerd left the club & signed for Crystal Palace in May 1905. Earlier in the season he had also featured in ‘A’s friendly against Rutherford College on September 10th when they won 5:2; & on February 18th when they lost to Whitley Athletic 3:2 on February 18th.1905. During that season Wilf once again also assisted Newcastle & District side Elswick St. Aidan’s ‘A’ on at least a further three occasions in his familiar half back role.

At that time Crystal Palace were a small Southern League Division II side. However, inhis first season with club he assisted them to win that championship & be promoted into Division I. Wilf’s league debut for Palace was on September 2nd 1905, featuring in his regular right position. They lost on the day to Southampton 4:3, but this minor setback did not halt what was to be a great league campaign, with the side winning many of their games, the last of which featured Innerd when they beat Wycombe Wanderers 4:0 on April 14th; before ending the campaign with a 2:2 draw against Fulham reserves on April 17th. Wilf featured in 16 of their matches & also played in a further 7 FA. Cup ties that season. The first of these was on October 7th when they scored a resounding 7:0 win over Clapham & Innerd got himself on the score sheet. After also playing in a 2Nd Qualifying Round 3:0 win over the 2Nd Grenadier Guards on October 28th ; he scored twice in the 3rd Qualifying Round when they defeated Chelsea 7:1. A 1:0 win over Luton Town on December 9th saw Palace progress into the 1st. Round proper & here they faced Blackpool. The tie ended in a 1:1 draw on January 13th & they then drew again in the replay on January 17th. before exiting in the 2Nd replay on January 22nd when they lost 1:0. Little is known of the first team’s friendly team line ups from those early years; but it is known that he was in the Crystal Palace side that played Newcastle United ‘A’s on December 16th.1905 & held them to a 2:2 draw. Life in Division I of the Southern League was tough at first for Palace. However, they survived the season in 19th place & Wilf made 37 appearances in the campaign, beginning with their opening 3:0 win over Northampton Town. He got one further goal that season & this was scored in a league fixture on November 17th when they beat Millwall 3:0.  The last of his appearances that season was in the sides final game of the season on April 29th when they lost 4:2 to New Bromton. The club had a good run in the FA. Cup that season & Wilf featured in all 8 of their cup ties; beginning with a 4th Qualifying Round 4:0 win over Rotherham County on December 8th. They were drawn against the mighty Newcastle in the 1st Round on January 12th. and they did an amazing giant killing action by defeating them 1:0. Next up were Fulham & after a goalless draw on February 2nd they won the replay 1:0 on February 6th. In the 3rd Round tie against Brentford on February 23rd. there was further stalemate, 1:1; but in the replay they progressed with a 1:0 win. Their cup run came to an end in the 4th Round but not before holding Everton to a 1:1 draw on March 9th. They lost the replay 4:1 on March 13th. Wilf had been captain of the side that season & would remain so until the end of his time with club.

Carrying on from their great cup run Crystal Palace now had a much improved league campaign during the 1907-08 season. Wilf once again featured in the majority of their fixtures; adding a further 34 appearances to his tally including two as centre forward.
After assisting the side in their opening game on September 4th when they lost 2:0 to Northampton; he found the net on three occasions. His first goal of the season was on October 5th when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2:1. He then netted again in the sides following game, which was a 1:1 draw with Northampton Town. His last goal came a little later on November 2nd in a 2:1 win over Brighton. Despite losing the final game of the season on April 25th; 4:1 to Watford; they claimed a very commendable
4th place in the Southern League Division I championship. In the FA. Cup Innerd played in all his sides 3 matches; beginning with a 4:2 victory over Coventry City on January 11th. This was hen followed by a 2Nd Round 3:2 win over Plymouth Argyle on February 1st; before exiting in the 3RD Round to Grimsby Town 1:0 on February 22nd. The 1908-09 season would be Wilf Innerd’s last at Crystal Palace. Their season got off to a good start with a 1:1 draw at Coventry City on September 1st followed by a 5:1 hammering of Leyton on September 5th. Innerd found himself less of an immediate choice in the starting line ups & he was in & out of the side & by the end the season had made 245 league appearances. The side dipped in form in the league & after being in their 1:1 draw with QPR on April 3rd the club went on to end the season in 16th place. This game would be Innerd’s final senior appearance at the club. There was not much joy in the FA. Cup either. In the 1St Round they held Wolves to a 2:2 draw on January 16th & then won the replay 4:2 after extra time on January 21st. They now faced Burnley in the 2Nd Round & drew with them at home 0:0 on February 6th; before crashing out in the replay with a disastrous 9:0 defeat on February 10th. It was in the Wolves game that Wilf suffered an injury which impeded upon the rest of his career. That season Crystal Palace took part in the London Challenge Cup & Innerd featured in one match on September 7th when they defeated Croydon Common 1:0. He also assisted the side in 2 of their London Professional Charity Cup ties; April 28th in a 0:0 draw with Leyton & then in a 1:1 draw in the replay on April 30th. The game was concluded at the end of the first half of extra time, with Leyton declining to continue & this resulted in the medals being withheld. Wilf Innerd’s senior appearance record during his with Palace is a very respectable 111 League appearances, with an additional 24 cup outings; scoring 4 league & 3 FA. Cup goals. In June 1909 Wilf returned to North East of England joining Shildon Athletic. There are no appearance details known at present of Innerd’s one season at the club. On August 24th 1910 Innerd returned to Tyneside & signed for Newcastle City.  This would be his final club & he assisted them in their North Eastern League compaign during that season. One appearance he is known to have made in the league, was in featuring against Newcastle’s Reserve side in the opening game of the following season 1911-12; at inside left on September 1st . They lost the game 1:0. His last known season with Newcastle City is the 1912-13 season & he featured in their North Eastern League campaign as well assisting them to reach the final of the Northumberland Senior Cup in April 1913. They lost a close fought final against Newburn 2:1 at St. James Park. The date Wilf Innerd actually hung up his boots & retire from playing is likely to have been prior the Great War. He lived on Tyneside in his later years & died in June 1967.
