PLAYER PROFILE

William ‘Billy’ Wilson was born in Durham in 1880. He began his football career in North East of England with local side South Shields, who played in the Northern Alliance League. His debut was for the club was at the start of the 1898-99 season. This was on September 2nd in the sides opening league game of the season, which they lost 1:0 to Jarrow. Not all his appearances from the season are known, but he did feature in at least 16 league matches , culminating in a 3:2 win over Blyth. South Shields completed their fixtures in 5th. place. The club took part in the FA. Cup that season & their campaign  began on September 24th. with 3:1 Qualifying round win over Shildon. On October 15th they then defeated Bishop Auckland 2:0 in a further Qualifying tie. This latter tie saw the match resulted voided & awarded to Shields’ opponents due to the size of their pitch. Wilson played in both matches & he also featured in the sides 6:1 win over Ouston in the Durham Senior Cup 2nd. Round. In the next round they drew 2:2 with Leadgate Park on November 12th, before being eliminated from the competition. One of the South Shields league fixtures, on January 7th; saw them battle in snowy conditions against Stanley; losing 7:2; but it was agreed to ‘downgrade’ the match to a friendly & the revised league fixture was played on February 11th & resulted in a 3:3 draw. Other friendly matches of note that season featuring Wilson, were a 8:0 hammering of Rutherford College on September 10th & a 7:1 victory over Newcastle’s ‘A’s on April 22nd. Season 1899-1900 got off to a poor start for Wilson when he came off injured after half an hour in their opening fixture with Jarrow which they 3:0. He recovered quickly & his known league appearances that season totalled 12. The last of these was on March 10th when they defeated Shankhouse 3:1, although he likely featured in others after this. There was also an abandoned match which he played on March 17th when they defeating Stanley 1:0, before the game was stopped due to a snow storm. South Shields finished in 6th. place in the league table. There was little cup involvement for Wilson or the club that season. On October 14th they lost 1:0 to Gateshead NER in a FA. Cup 2nd. Qualifying Round tie. He also played in the sides 3:2 victory over Bishop Auckland in the 1st. Round of the Durham Senior Cup on January 6th. He is also known to have played in two friendly matches that season; on December 2nd when they defeated Tow Law 7:3 & then on April 7th.1900 when they beat South Bank 3:1. This is the last known appearance for the club by Wilson as in May for the then handsome transfer fee of £50 he moved to Newcastle.

His introduction to life at St. James Park began in the pre season when he was selected to play in two of the clubs practice matches. The first was on August 17th. featuring for the ‘Stripes XI’ in a 1:0 win over the ‘Whites XI’. After a further practice match, he made his debut at the club at reserve level in the ‘A’s opening Northern Alliance game on September 3rd. when they defeated Willington Athletic 3:2. He is known to have played in at least 12 of the sides league games during a very successful season which them claim the league title in April, with his final contribution being on April 20th. in a 1:0 win over Willington Athletic. The ‘A’s also had cup success involving Billy, this was ion the Northumberland Senior Cup. He featured in the sides 1st. Round 9:0 thrashing of Walbottle on December 1st & also in the final on March 2nd. when they romped to victory 7:0. As well as featuring in a few reserve friendly matches that season, Wilson got his first taste of first team football as the season drew to a close in friendly action. The first was on April 29th against Glasgow Rangers when they lost 3:1 & then again the following g day at Hearts when they lost 2:0. Season 1901-02 saw Billy Wilson’s career continue at reserve level & it would not be until the season after that he finally broke into first competitive football; such was the strength in depth of the side in the Edwardian era. At reserve level , Wilson’s first action of the season, after being involved in one practice match; was on September 7th in a 5:0 victory Gateshead NER. This would be the first of 16 known league appearances culminating on March 29th with 4:1 win over Thornaby. He was also involved in a 10:0 trouncing of his old club South Shields Athletic on November 23rd. Newcastle’s ‘second string’ won the Northern Alliance title again that season. Near the end of the season, Wilson also played in the reserve sides 1:0 win over North Shields Athletic on April 18th in the semi final of the Tyne Charity Shield. Unfortunately it is not known if he played in the final tie or not. His last game of the season in the reserves that season was a friendly 2:0 win over Carfin Ennitt on April 26th.

The 1902-03 season would prove to be Wilson’s most successful at Newcastle. It began in a similar way to the previous ones, with involvement in two pre season practice matches & then involvement in the Reserves league campaign. It was the dawn of a new era with side now playing in the North Eastern League & his first involvement was on September 6th. in a 4:0 win over Crook.. They had another strong campaign defeating Darlington St. Augustine’s 8:0 on October 25th. en route to winning the league title. Billy is known to have played in 13 of the matches, the last of which was on March 7th when they beat Stockton 3:0. The only reserve cup action was on November 29th in a Northumberland Senior Cup 1st. Round  9:0 hammering of Prudhoe; following two Tyne Charity Shield matches. On April 4th in 3:0 win over Willington Athletic & then on April 10th in a 5:1 victory over Wallsend Park Villa. This was possibly Wilson’s last competitive game at reserve level at Newcastle. As again it is not known if he featured in a final tie that season. It was this season that Wilson was given his chance to shine in the first team & he made his league debut for the on December 13th 1902 verses Bury. They lost a closely fought match 1:0. He went on a run of 4 appearances in total that season, the last of which was January 3rd. when they lost 5:0 to Stoke City. Two days later, Billy got a further first team run out in a friendly against Glasgow Rangers, which they 3:1. Earlier in the season Wilson also played in a strong Newcastle ‘Scratch XI’ side that played Blackpool in a friendly on November 1st & won 4:1. At the very end of the season, before he left the club; Billy Wilson featured at left back in a reserve friendly against Ripon Athletic on April 25th. which they won 5:2., bringing an end to his  short playing career at Newcastle.

Before the next season commenced in August 1903, Billy Wilson left Newcastle; signing for Bradford City. The lower league side immediately placed him in their first team & he made his debut at right back on September 1st. 1903 in a 2:0 Division II defeat to Grimsby Town. Billy played in 30 leaguer matches that season, with his final contribution being on April 23rd 1904, losing 2:0 to Blackpool. Bradford finished in the top half the table in 10th. place. The clubs FA. Cup involvement also featured Wilson in 3 further games that season. On October 3rd. when they defeated Rockingham Colliery 6:1 in a 1st. Qualifying Round. He then played in the 3rd Qualifying Round 5:0 win over Worksop on October 31st; before the cup run came to an end on November 14th when they lost 2:1 to Chesterfield in the 4th. Qualifying Round.  Wilson’s only other season with Bradford City now followed & they got the 1904-05 campaign underway with a close 3:2 defeat to Gainsborough Trinity on September 3rd. Wilson added a further 28 league appearances to his tally that season, culminating in his final league game at Bradford on April 24th when a game against Leicester Fosse ended in a goalless draw & the club finished the season in an improved 8th. position. That summer Wilson left Bradford City & returned to the North East of England to continue his football career. His only other first team action at Bradford City that season had been to feature in two FA. Cup ties. On December 10th when they hammered Sunderland West End 9:0 in a 6th. Qualifying Round tie; & then on January 14th; when they lost a 1st. Round tie to Millwall 4:1.
At both clubs no record has been found of full back Wilson ever scoring a goal at any level. After trials with Oldham & Everton, Wilson returned back in the North East, Billy Wilson began playing for West Stanley during the 1905-06 season. Sadly  team line ups from this club have been difficulty to obtain & the only two known appearances Wilson made for them were in the FA. Cup. Firstly on December 9th when they drew 1:1 with Northampton in a 4th. Round tie. Then in the replay on December 14th when they lost 3:0. The following season he featured regularly in the teams league side which ended the season 4th place in the North Eastern League more appearances at West Stanley. Wilson’s only known appearances during the following season 1907-08 would be Wilson’s last at West Stanley before he joined South Shields Adelaide in the summer of 1908. Club records state Wilson also turned out for Allenby Park during this period but details have come to light. His only known West Stanley game with  Wilson playing was on January 11th when they defeated Penrith 1:0. West Stanley reached the final of the Durham Senior Cup that season, but further research into details from this match on March 16th verses Shildon is required.

South Shields Adelaide appears to be Billy Wilson’s final club & he made his senior debut for them on October 3rd in a FA. Cup Qualifying 2:1 win over Wallsend Park Villa. The clubs line ups in both their North Eastern League & Cup campaigns were more frequently published in the press, giving one a greater insight into the final two season of Wilson’s playing career. In total Wilson is known to have played in 14 league games with the side ending the season in mid table. His last known game that season was April 28th. when they drew 4:4 with Darlington St. Augustine’s. South Shields played Newcastle’s Reserves twice that season losing 2:0, then winning 2:0 & Billy played in both games. He also featured in a further cup match on November 14th. in a 1:1 draw in Durham Senior Cup 5th. Round against Gateshead Town. It would be during the 1909-10 season that South Shields had a number of great cup runs with Wilson heavily involved in the action. They kicked off their season on September 4th with a 4:2 victory over Seaham Harbour. & after losing out to Willington Athletic after two replays in a FA. Cup Qualifying Round,. By the end of the season, South Shields Adelaide ended in 8th place in the North Eastern League & Wilson last appearance in the sides campaign was on April 30th when they lost 3:1 to Spennymoor United. Newcastle’s reserves got the better of South Shields that season; defeating them 5:1 & then on January 1st hammering them 9:3. The side also recorded a number of high scoring wins including an 8:1 hammering of Darlington in the league on April 16th. However, it was in cup competition that they excelled that season. After seeing off Esh Winning Rangers 3:1, in an earlier round in December, they faced Seaham Harbour in Quarter Finals on January 22nd & won 3:1. On February 5th they defeated Sunderland Reserves 4:0 to reach the final. This took place on March 26th & they lost out a closely fought match 3:2 to Hartlepool United. South Shields & Wilson faced similar disappointment in the Sunderland Ship Owners Cup. In the Semi Final on March 2nd they defeated Middlesbrough Reserves 4:1 & then faced Sunderland’s Reserves in the final on April 6th. They were once again runners up, losing out in a 2:0 defeat. A third attempt at silverware also ended in disappointment when they took on Blyth Spartans for the Tynemouth Infirmary Senior Challenge Cup on April 20th. They lost another closely fought tie 2:1. I can find no record of Billy

Wilson continued playing career with South Shields Adelaide for the next two seasons. He continued to mainly dominate the right back place & he found himself on the score sheet on two occasions. Both were penalty kicks on February 11th in a 1:0 win over Sunderland ‘A’s & then on February 25th. in a 1:1 draw with Wingate Albion. They completed their league fixtures in 5th. place. The side had  a great run in the Durham Senior Cup that season & Wilson featured greatly in this. After featuring in the 2nd Round against Hebburn Argyle in January 1911, he was in the side that defeated Shildon Athletic 2:1 in the semi final tie on February 4th. In the final at Roker Park they faced Hartlepools United on April 1st. Here they won the prestigious trophy at last, defeating them 2:1. Wilson also featured for them in a FA. Cup Qualifier earlier in the season September 17t, when they defeated Bedlington United 2:0.

Season 1911-12 appears to be Billy Wilson’s last for South Shields Adelaide. His dominance as a full back was now being challenged & at times he found himself turning for the clubs ‘A’s in the Wearside League. For the first team, Wilson did claim a further goal. Firing home another penalty in a Durham Senior Cup 2nd. Round  4:1 win over West Stanley on January 13th.1912.  His last known appearance for the first team was on March 30th. when they defeated Spennymoor 4:0 in the North Eastern League. A resut which helped them regain the 5th. place position at the end of the season. On April 30th Wilson was known to turn out in the clubs ‘A’s final Wearside League match at left back. The game against Trimdon Grande resulted in a 2:1 & is possibly Wilson’s very last appearance for South Shields Adelaide as he appears to have retired from playing. Following further research during the following season no matches played by Billy Wilson & he was most likely retired. However club records indicate he was on the books of North Shields Athletic. Their team line ups that season only included goalkeeper James Wilson & not William.  After World War I, Billy resided in South Shields & died in 1921.
