PLAYER PROFILE

Alex Lockie was born in South Shields on April 15th. 1915. He  began playing football locally for South Shields Youth Club, before turning out for South Shields St. Andrews. On leaving school Alex worked locally as a draughtsman & during WWII he worked in this trade at a Tyneside shipyard. It was here that his talents were spotted by Sunderland in 1935 whom signed him in August of that year. After initially playing at left back; by the time he made his senior debut for Sunderland, as the 1933-37 season drew to a close he had switched to central defensive role. From this point everyone of his many senior appearances throughout his whole career was played at centre half. His debut at Sunderland had seen him replaced first team regular Bert Johnston on April 14th in a Division I 3L:1 defeat to Manchester City.  Three days later he got another senior run out against Liverpool & they won 4:2. The following season saw Lockie further battle to gain to gain the No.5 shirt, & his first senior game of he 1937-38 campaign was on November 20th; featuring in a 0:0 draw with Stoke City. This would be the first of 9 Division I appearances, which culminated in a run out on May 7th when Sunderland feasted Wolves 1:0. The result the side end the season in ? position.  The 1938-39 season saw Lockie now really establish himself as the clubs first choice at centre half & after featuring on August 27th he went on to play in a total 29 league fixtures. On December 3rd. he scored his first senior goal at the club. This was in league 2:2 draw with Bolton Wanderers. Sunderland completed their Division I campaign on May 6th with 0:0 draw with Wolves; ending the season in ?? place. Lockie was also involved in the sides FA Cup run that season. He featured in 4 cup ties, beginning with a 3RD Round 3:0 win over Plymouth Argyle on January 7th. They followed this up with a 4TH Round 2:0 victory over local rivals Middlesbrough on January 21st before facing Blackburn Rovers in the 5th Round. This took place on February 11th. & ended in a 1:1 draw. Lockie also played in the replay on February 16th which ended in a 0:0 draw, but he did not feature in the 2nd replay when they exited from the competition??. The full league programme of the 1939-40 season began as normal, with the threat of war looming & Lockie featured in 2 matches, before Britain declared itself at war with Germany & the fixture programme was suspended. For the record these appearances were on August 28th in a 3:0 win over Derby County & on August 30th in a 2:1 defeat to Huddersfield Town. Hastily arranged friendly matches now followed & Lockie’s only known further involvement with Sunderland that season was on March 30th when played against Newcastle to raise war funds & lost 2:0. He also made a friendly guest appearance for North Shields earlier in the season. This was on November 4th. against Newcastle United’s reserve side & the game ended in a 2:2 draw. During the war years Alex returned to his draughtsman trade at a local Tyneside shipyard.

Lockie had now become recognised as a tough tackling player, whom one of his colleagues once described as ‘tackled like a tank’ & it was during the 1940-41 season that Lockie made his senior guest appearance for Newcastle. This was on November 23RD when they lost 3:0 to York City. He replaced the clubs regular centre half, Jimmy Denmark, in this Northern Section Football League war time match. His only known involvement with his own club Sunderland, that season, was to feature in 2 friendly games against Newcastle. These were on December 21st when they lost 3:1 & then on April 14th when they won 4:3.
Sunderland began competing alongside Newcastle in war  time league football from the 1941-42 season. Lockie featured in 14 of Sunderland’s Northern Section Football League matches from August to December; beginning with a 7:1 hammering of Sheffield United on August 30th & culminating on December 25th with a 3:1 defeat to Gateshead. The club completed their fixtures in 10th place. He also featured in 9 War League Cup matches as well, beginning with a Qualifying Round tie against Middlesbrough on December 27th which they won convincingly 6:0. The reached the final of the competition & Lockie played in both legs of the semi final against Grimsby Town, beginning with 1st Leg on May 9th which ended in a 0:0 draw. In the 2Nd Leg on May 16th they won 3:2; but he did not get to feature in the final. His other non-competitive involvement that season included a friendly against Middlesbrough on Mar 28th which they lost 2:1, but he scored a rare goal;  & then against Newcastle in a game which resulted in a 2:2 draw. The 1942-43 season saw Alec only feature in 2 war league fixtures, with first being on November 7th. when his side beat Middlesbrough 4:1. This was followed by a 3:3 draw with Newcastle on December 12th; before appearing more regularly in the War League Cup. After assisting in the 7:1 defeat of Gateshead on December 26th in an early Qualifying Round;  highlights included featuring in the 7:0 win over Middlesbrough on January 16th. He also claimed another rare goal to his tally; scoring against Newcastle in February. Sunderland entered the Wst Riding Cup that season & after trouncing Middlesbrough 8:0 in the 1sT Round 1st. Leg on March 20th; they progressed on through the next round into the semi finals to face. Played over two legs they faced Bradford Park Avenue. Lockie played in both legs as they beat them 1:0 on April 17th & then drew 2:2 in the return leg on April 24th to reach the final.. This was again played over two legs & was against Huddersfield Town; with Lockie continuing in his defensive role. On May 1st the 1St Leg tie ended in a 2:2 draw before they lost out 4:1 in the 2Nd Leg on May 8th. Alex is also known to featured in two friendly games; on March 6th in a 2:1 defeat to Gateshead & then on March 13th in a 2:1 over Gateshead. Season 1943-44 saw Sunderland’s war league form dip in the Northern Section competition & they ended the season in a lowly 45th position. Lockie got to feature in 18 of the fixtures, beginning with a convincing 6:1 victory over Leeds United. The last of his involvement came on Christmas Day when his side went down to Middlesbrough 4:0. The war league cup competition got underway in late December & he featured in their first match, when they lost to Newcastle 4:2 on December 27th, in Qualifying tie.  His last of 7 outings in this competition was in a further Qualifying tie on February 26th when they beat Middlesbrough 5:4. Sunderland’s season culminated with entry into the Tyne-Tees-Wear Cup & Lockie played in both the sides Semi Final legs against Newcastle United. Unfortunately they lost them both; 3:0 on April 15th. & then 5:2 on April 22nd. His other action for Sunderland that season was to play in 7 friendly matches; the last of which was on May 6th when they lost 4:2 to Middlesbrough. A further 18 war league appearances followed during the 1944-45 season, beginning with 0:0 draw with Middlesbrough. That campaign ended in a 31st place finish, with Lockie’s last game being on December 23rd when Sunderland lost 1:0 to Gateshead. He featured in a further 10 War Cup Qualifying matches which began with two consecutive defeats to Newcastle in December & culminated on March 17th with a 2:1 defeat to Middlesbrough. Sunderland made greater progress in the Tune-Tees-Wear Cup that season reaching the final, with Lockie prominent in his central defensive pivotal role. They first saw off Hartlepool over two legs, winning 5:0 on April 21st & then 2:0 on April 28th, In the 2Nd Round it was York City  whom they knocked out. After an unconvincing 2:1 defeat in the 1st Leg on May 5th; they won through with 2nd. Leg 6:1 victory on May 12th.  Huddersfield Town again stood in their way in the semi final; however this time despite losing the first leg 1:0 on May 19th; they won the 2nd Leg on May 21st to reach the final. This took place in front of a large crowd at St. James Park on May 26th but it was Gateshead who came out on top with a 6:3 victory over them. Earlier that month Lockie had also been in the Sunderland side for a prestigious victory celebration friendly match against Newcastle & lost 5:0 on May 9th. This was his last of  8 friendly appearances that season.

Despite peacetime returning a further season of wartime football continued & a further season of Northern section involvement. However,  the English FA. Cup competition did restart. Lockie, continued as his sides’ regular centre half, in what was to be his final season on Wearside.  Lockie played in 35 further war league fixtures that season, beginning with a 6:3 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on August 25th. Wins included, defeating Leeds United 5:1 on December 8th & Manchester United 4:2 on December 22nd. His last league appearance was at the end of the campaign when they lost 1:0 to Middlesbrough on May 4th; as the side ended the season in 18th. place. He also played in 4 FA Cup tiers that season beginning with a 3:1 win over Grimsby Town on January 5th. Each round that season was played over two legs & in the 2nd Leg on January 9th they won 2:1. They faced Bury next & progressed with a 1st. Leg 3:1 on January 26th followed by a 5:4 defeat on January 29th. They exited to Birmingham City in the next round, despite winning 1:0 in the 1st.  Leg on February 9th; as they lost 3:1 in the 2Nd Leg on February 13th. Lockie’s final senior action in a Sunderland shirt came at the end of that season on May 8th. Here he featured in the sides 2:0 defeat to Darlington in the final of the Durham Professional Cup. In September 1946 Lockie was transferred from Sunderland to Notts. County, now in the twilight of his career; having made 40 senior league & 10 cup appearances, scoring one league goal. In addition to this his war time football saw him make a further 147 war league & cup appearances, scoring 3 goals. At Notts. County, he quickly made his debut on September 14th. This was in an English League Division III (South)match against Norwich City which they won 3:0. The side had an average season, but a high pint which involved Lockie was their 6:0 victory over Bristol Rovers on November 16th. His last action in their league campaign was on March 8th. when they lost 4:1 to QPR in a game which would be his last senior appearance. The side ended the season in 12th. place. Prior to this Lockie had featured in Notts. County’s FA. Cup run; beginning with a 1st. Round 2:1 win over Leyton Orient on November 30th. They then defeated Swindon Town on December 14th. before being knocked out in the 3rd. Round. Here Lockie & his team mates could do little to suppress a superior Luton Town side which defeated them 6:0 on January 11th. Including these three cup ties, Lockie played in 26 first team matches that season.
