PLAYER PROFILE
 
Michael McCudden joined Newcastle  from Northern Ireland, with fellow youth international players Shane Ferguson & Patrick McLaughlin in the summer of 2007 on a two year scholarship. He began to feature for the academy during the 2007-08 season. However, before the season got underway, he was on the bench as a sub. in a reserve pre season friendly against Workington on August 2nd. He came off the bench due to an injury to Godsmark after only 8 minutes to make his reserve debut at the club in their 1:0 defeat. His baptism last into the second half when he was replaced on the hour. Just prior to this he had also featured for the clubs academy in the Keele University Youth Tournament. In this on July 31st , he got his first goal for the club in a 4:2 win over Southampton on July 31st. On August 4th he was also in action again the youth team when they travelled to play Northern League side Consett. He started in the game at outside left & was then replaced at half time. Michael then came back on as a sub. at centre forward on 68 minutes; in the sides 5:1 defeat. McCrudden failed to feature again for the reserves that season, but he began excel in the clubs under 18’s academy. He made his first competitive appearance for them in a FA. Premier Academy League Group D game on August 25th , coming on as a sub. in a 2:1 defeat to Stoke City. This would be the first of  9(+5) appearances in the sides league campaign, which included his first league start on October 6th in a 3:2 defeat to Leeds United. He scored one goal that season on November 10th in a 4:1 victory over Huddersfield Town. The last start he got in the side was on February 23rd in a 0:0 with Liverpool. This was followed by a substitute appearances for the academy on March 1st in a 2:0 win over Sheffield Wednesday. The side ended the season in Group D in 8th. position. At this point in his career Michael had been a Northern Ireland under 16’s international; making 9 appearances; scoring 1 goal. The 2007-08 season saw him progress in the under 17’s side. His debut was on August 29th. 2007 when they lost 5:1 to England. On October 22nd; in a European Championship qualifier against Moldova, McCrudden scored his first goal in the side. The game ended in a 3:0 win for the Northern Ireland side. In total he featured in 8(+2) matches at Under 17’s level, the last of which was on March 22nd. 2008 when they lost a European Qualifier to Wales 3:1.               
 
During the pre season for the 2008-09 season Michael once again got a further opportunity to step up into the reserve side. This was on July 15th; coming on as a late sub, when they lost 6:2 to Newcastle Benfield. With the Academy side he got the chance to travel to take part in the pre season Doetinchem Youth Tournament in Holland & scored in their opening game on August 8th when they beat AZ Alkmaar 2:0. He also scored the sides second goal in their 2:0 Semi Final victory over De Graafschap on August 10th. In the final they faced Atletico Paranaense of Brazil, soon afterwards on the same day. The game ended in a 0:0 draw & went to penalties which they lost 6:5 to finish runners up. Michael featured in the final & missed a crucial penalty in the shoot out. McCrudden made his competitive reserve debut on September 17th. 2008 verses Bolton Wanderers, as a sub, in a 2:0 defeat. This was the first of only 1(+4) league appearances for the reserves, with an injury hindering his progress. His only start in their Premier Reserve League (Northern Division)? Campaign was on February 23rd when they beat Middlesbrough 3:2. The last of his ‘from the bench’ appearances came nearer the end of the season on March 16th. in a 2:1 win over Everton. He reserves ended the season in 4th. place in the league. Michael also got to feature for the reserves in cup match action. The first that season was on September 22nd in a Central League Cup group match against Sheffield United. This was as a half time sub. in a 3:0 defeat. He then got to start in the sides Central League Cup group match against Hartlepool United, which they won 2:1 on October 27th. McCrudden also featured in 2 of the sides Northumberland Senior Cup matches. In the first on October 14th he scored his first competitive reserve goal in the sides 4:1 victory over Prudhoe Town in the 1st Round. On March 2nd his other appearance was as a sub in the sides 2nd Round 5:0 victory over Team Northumbria. Perhaps his most successful involvement at Newcastle, was in the sides FA Premier academy League Group D 2008-09 programme. He first featured in the side on August 22nd in a 2:2 draw with Leicester City. This would be the first of 17(+8) appearances in the side, which included him hitting a very credible 8 goals. He scored his first on August 30th in a 1:0 victory over Chelsea & his eighth in the sides final game on May 7th when they beat Middlesbrough 3:1. The result saw them finish as runners up in 2nd place in the league table. McCrudden was also active in the Under 18’s FA Youth Cup ties that season. He started in 3 matches, beginning with a 3rd. Round tie with Oldham Athletic on December 9th, when they won 2:1. This was followed by featuring at inside left in their 4th Round 3:1 win over QPR; on January 15th. & then playing back on the wing on February 4th. when they got knocked by Manchester City, with a 4:2 defeat. When the season ended he was included in the academy squad which travelled to Bosnia to take part in the Football Friends Youth Tournament. Player details from the tournament are vague, but it is known that McCrudden scored a goal in their 4:1 win over Levski Sofia. This game was the last of 3 they played in during the tournament. For his country he got his first cap at Under 19’s level that season on September 10th. in a friendly 2:0 win over Iceland.                 
 
Michael McCrudden’s 2009-10 campaign once again began in pre season; & he featured in 2 Academy friendly games. Firstly on July 31st. when they lost 4:0 to Hearts & then on August 15th. coming on as a sub. against Chelsea, well into the second half in a thrilling 5:3 victory. He also got a further taste of reserve action for Newcastle in the pre season; when he came on in the second half in the sides 4:2 win over Blyth Spartans on August 4th. McCrudden featured in a total of 5(+2) Academy League Group D matches, beginning on August 29th; when the side suffered a 5:0 defeat to Watford. The side fared better in his third game when they walloped Huddersfield Town 6:0. His last full Academy league game at Newcastle was on October 31st. in a 2:1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. This was followed by two further substitute appearances, the last of which was on December 12th; when the side drew 1:1 with Huddersfield Town. At reserve level, despite stiff competition; Michael still managed to come as a sub. in 4 of their ToteSport.com Reserve League East Division games; the first of which was against Lincoln City in a 1:1 draw on September 21st. The last of his ‘from the bench’ run outs in the reserves was on April 14th. 2010 in a 22 draw with Scunthorpe United, replacing Danquah on 57 minutes. This would be McCrudden’s last action for Newcastle, with side ending the season in 6th place. A high point of the season was McCrudden’s selection to further represent his country at Under 19 level earlier in the season. This was in Northern Ireland’s UEFA Under 19’s Championship programme & came on as a sub. in 2 of their games. These were on October 7th in a 1:1 draw with Bulgaria & then as a sub in a 0:0 draw with Iceland. He was also an unused sub. in a further match. Michael McCrudden left Newcastle that summer & signed for Derry City on July 12th. 2010. Derry played in the Irish Division I that season & in Ireland the league season runs from March through to November; with him joining them in mid season. He made his senior competitive debut in the side as a sub. on July 16th in a league 2:1 win over Shelbourne. He got to make one start on July 23rd when they beat Salthill Devon 1:0. From the bench after being an unused sub for a couple of weeks he got to play in two further appearances in the Derry side as a sub. The last was on September 3rd when they lost 2:0 to Waterford. This would be his last senior appearance in the side that season; with the strong Derry City side completing their fixtures by winning the league & promotion into the Irish Premier League. In the 2011 pre season Michael’s first taste of action was as a sub. in a 3:2 pre season friendly win over Dergview on February 18th. He then started in the sides convincing 7:0 win over Institute FC, in a Billy Kee Memorial Match  on February 21st. The 2011 season got underway on March 4th  & McCrudden came on as a late sub. when Derry City lost their opening match 1:0 to Sligo Rovers. By July his league action had all been from the bench still as he battled for a place; however, in the Irish League Cup He got to start in a 2nd Round 2:1 win over Mervue United & he scored his first goal of the season. In the 3rd Round on June 27th; they defeated UCD 3:1 & McCrudden got another start and got another goal.

In January 2012, McCrudden left Derry & signed for Northern Ireland side Institute. After featuring in a friendly on February 9th; scoring a goal in a 3:0 win over Cockhill Celtic, he made his competitive debut later in the month. This was on February 18th.2012,  starting in a coca Cola Intermediate Cup 3:1 win over Bainbridge Town. His league debut followed on February 25th. when Institute lost 2:0 to Bangor. He went on to make the starting eleven all their remaining league fixtures; culminating in a 1:1 draw with Warrenpoint Town. The result saw the side complete their Irish FA. Division One Championship campaign in 3rd place. Michael featured in those remaining 9 league games, but failed to find the net. In the Intermediate Cup, Institute next faced Ard Rangers in the Quarter Finals & defeated them 3:2 on March 10th. McCrudden play in this match & in the semi final against Dergview on April 3rd , when they won 2:1. The final tie was to be held  on May 7th but unfortunately Institute did not get to play; as following an protest from Dergview that they fielded an ineligible player; their place was taken by Dergview instead. Season 2012-13 saw McCrudden become a more regular feature of Institutes forward line. He netted twice In pre season against Ballymallard & featured in Institutes opening league match with Lisburn Distillery on August 10th which ended in a 2:2 draw. Unfortunately, despite scoring twice in their next league match on August 17th when they defeated Coagh United 6:1; he went off with an injury. An early high point came on his return to action, after returning from injury, was a hat trick in a 6:2 victory over Tobermore United on October 27th In the Irish Cup he cored in the side 3rd round tie with Glentoran on October 9th. The game ended in a 2:2 after extra time, with his side losing out 4:2 on pens. He featured in over 16 matches, scoring over 112 league goals that season & fired home another hat trick in a 3:1 win over Loughgall. He scored in the Intermediate Cup Semi Final in March, but it is not know if he featured in the final. Institute only just missed out on promotion  & ended the season 3rd place . Institute rounded off their season in style, winning the IFA Intermediate Cup Final on June 6th. 2014. They defeated Ards Rangers 1:0, with McCrudden at inside left.  Institute began their 2013-14 in determined form & after a 2;2 draw with Lisburn Distillery on the opening day, McCrudden assisted his side to a 6:2 victory over Coagh United; scoring 2 of the goals. In December they demolished Shorts 8:1 & McCrudden scored one bringing his tally to date to 5 league goals. On October 13th Institute defeated Donegal Celtic 4:2 in the Irish League, with McCrudden firing home two first half penalty kicks. They also played Newbuildings United in the final of the North West Senior Cup. The game ended in a 2:2 draw after extra time, but they lost the penalty shoot out 5:3. McCrudden assisted one of sides goals, before being withdrawn in the 102nd. minute. Despite in jury set backs McCrudden went on to score 12 league & 4 cup goals that season. These included a hat trick on January 20th 2014; in a 6:1 hammering of Larne. He was the clubs leading goal scorer that season & the clubs final game on April 26th saw them defeat Limavady United 2:0 to clinch the NIFL championship title. McCrudden also scored in that game. 
 
 Institute were now in the Irish Premier League, but McCrudden did not get his first taste of the clubs top flight football until September 13th.2014. This was as a second half sub against Ballymallard. They won a closely fought match 3:2, & McCrudden scored in the 56th minute. Unfortunately, soon after the game he sustained a further injury & he did not return to his side, who now struggling in the league on January 23rd. 2015. This was as a sub in 2:1 defeat Glenavon. He got a start in their Irish Cup 6th Round tie against Carrick Rangers on February 7th. They were knocked out 3:1 after extra time. Soon after he scored his only other goal of the season gaining a point in a 1:1 draw with Ballinamallard United. This would be his only goal & the side ended the season relegated in bottom place. McCrudden featured in 10 (+4) league appearances in total during that campaign. Michael left the club in May 2015 to sign for Ballinamallard United.  He featured in a pre season friendly 1:0 win over Ards on July 25th & this was likely his first team debut. He then made his competitive league debut for Ballinamallard on August 8th in a 3:0 win over Warrenpoint Town. He opened his goal scoring account for his new club on September 19th in a 1:1 draw with Ballymena United, netting in the 68th minute. The clubs league form was poor and they ended the season in a lowly 11th place, requiring to play off to avoid relegation. Michael remained with club until ate January and requested a move back to Institute, for personal & travel reasons. Hif final appearance for Ballinamallard was on December 19th when they lost 2;1 to Carrick Rangers. In total he featured in 18 (+2) league matches, scoring 3 goals. The last of these was one December 12th in a 1;1 draw with Linfield.     McCrudden also played in a 1;0 win over Linfield in the 3rd Rd of the League Cup on October 14th .  Instiute who were now back in the NI Championship, and having a good season pushing for promotion; however his first appearance that season was February 9th in a Billy Kee Cup friendly challenge match against a Derry City XI. They drew and lost 3;2 on penalties, with Michael scoring one of the penalties. His first competitive game appears to have been on February 20TH in a 2;0 victory over HW Welders. He notched his first goal a week later in a 4;0 win over Knockbreda & went on to score another 2 goals, the last of which was a penalty in a 2;2 draw with Lurgan Celtic on April 9th.   They ended the season in 5th  place and then faced his previous club Ballinamallard in the play off for promotion over two legs. He scored a penalty in the first leg on May 6th when they lost 1;2 & in the second leg on June 22nd they battled to a 3;3 drew, giving a 4;5 aggregate and not gaining promotion.  Season 2016-17 got underway on August 6th with a League Cup 1st Round tie verses Moyola Park, which they won 3;1, with McCrudden scoring in the 18th minute. Their league campaign kicked a week later, with a disappointing 2;1 defeat Warrenpoint;  before they won HW Welders on August 20th 3;1. McCrudden scored in the 59th minute.
