NUFC: DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR
1915-1916 SEASON

World War I, had led to the abandonment of the football league programme at the end of the last season. Many clubs joined quickly formed local leagues, whereas Newcastle for this first season of football choose not too & the clubs activities were very low key that season. Most players were involved in either reserved occupations or had signed up to active service. The ground itself became occupied by the army through until mid December & this left the club moving to the East of the city & using Brough Park, the then home of non league Newcastle City. The clubs activities greatly reduced & with no league or cup fixtures to compete for; Newcastle only organised and took part in 5 first team friendly matches during the whole season. These games saw them feature a number of guest players whom were usually employed locally as part of the war effort. For the second half the season, the club reclaimed their St. James Park home, with season culminating a friendly their against rivals Sunderland. The lack of activity, led to two of the clubs senior players to form their own sides to supplement these; forming their own ‘pseudo; Newcastle XI’s. The two players in question were Bill McCracken & Bob Hewison. At the end of this comprehensive review of the 1915-16 season all their known match details are detailed in full. In addition to this a veteran guest player William Hogg also put together a side & his game is also included. For completeness, at the end of this review a number of other Newcastle player related games are detailed. There was no reserve or other non first team that season at all.
