Attempts to keep any Newcastle United team going were put on hold completely for the duration of the 1916-17 season; such was the devastating effect of the Great War. For the only season in the clubs history since its inception the club would not field a team at any level. To keep the game alive in Newcastle for the public at home and not on active service, it was therefore left to an ever enthusiastic Bill McCracken to keep the friendly challenge matches going; putting together line ups which were sort of Newcastle & Guest player  ‘select elevens’. Munitions worker sides would often also prove a useful outlet for maintaining the fitness of players.  Below are the 5 known McCracken XI sides and details of their matches, there may have been more, but so far to date these are the only known matches. The one ‘home’ game was played at St. James Park. Bob Hewison appears to have been engaged elsewhere & I have been unable to identify any guest player XI’s such as Billy Hogg or Frank Cuggy from that season.
