1939-40 SEASON REVIEW

The 1939-40 Season began normally, like any other season, with Newcastle kicking off the Division Two league fixture programme away at Millwall, in another effort to push for promotion to get back into Division One. Likewise the reserves began their Central League programme & the ‘A’s in the Northern Alliance. On the transfer front the only major purchase was David Hamilton for £200 from Glasgow Shawfield Juniors.  The main player to leave the club was Alf Garnham for £500 to Queen of the South & there was also Arthur Frost who exited to New Brighton.. A full list of known transfers in and out at the club can be seen below. The league season was only a couple of weeks when the countries league programme was suspended with Britain’s involvement in the World War III as Germany ominously were occupying other European countries. Weeks of uncertainty then followed & clubs hastily arranged friendly matches & then in October a programme of regional War League matches was arranged to begin. In a similar manner to World War I, guest players of those serving in the forces; would become a regular occurrence .

However, the referee decided to award a goal kick as it was unclear whether the ball had gone in or hit the side netting. The Newcastle players had thought they had earned a draw until they saw the result in the press after the game, not noticing the goal kick in their celebrations. The match which was the other first team fixture played on the same day, saw goalkeeper Gray make his debut aged only 16 yeas 5 months & 25 days, creating a new club record for the youngest competitive debutant.
