NEWCASTLE EAST END

An Amalgamation & A Breakaway

It was in early October 1882 that the Stanley Football Club from the South Byker area of Newcastle decided to change their name to Newcastle East End. By January 1883 a local club call Rosewood amalgamated with East End; strengthening their squad. The club had been existence as a cricket club since the summer of 1881 & had only formed their football club in the summer of 1882. Below are all the known details of the Rosewood club during their brief existence.

Football – 1882-83 Season.

As mentioned, it was during the summer of 1882 that the Rosewood Cricket Club decided to form a football team. Despite a thorough examination of early period detailed street maps of Newcastle, no actual street or place called Rosewood has come to light. However, in the Byker & Heaton area to the East of the city there was a Rose House in St. Peter’s Basin & also a Rose Villas. It was noted that the clubs secretary was R. Murray & that the sides captain was R. Marr. Their first football match took place at the start of the season on October 7th & was against Newcastle West End; a club who would become instrumental in the clubs development & in particular of their future ground St. James Park which would become their home. Below are the details of the 4 known Rosewood Football Club matches.

OCT.7th.1882 (Home) v NEWCASTLE WEST END, Won 2:0.
Team details not known.

OCT.28th.1882 (Away) v NEWCASTLE FA. Won 1:0.
ROSEWOOD: RIPPON, G.McFARLANE, R.LIGHTFOOT, J.WILSON, C.HISCOCK, T.EWART, R.MARR, J.BROUGHTON, G.COWELL(COWEN?), C.WALKER, J.ROWLANDS
.

NOV.4th.1882 v ELSWICK LEATHER WORKS, Score not known- match abandoned. ‘Both teams played well but the game was not completed’.

NOV.25th.1882 v ALL SAINTS 2nd XI. Won 5:0.
ROSEWOOD: J.ROWLANDS, G.McFARLANE, R.LIGHTFOOT, J.WILSON, C.HISCOCK, C.WALKER, J.BROUGHTON, G.LLEWLLYN, W.WILSON

This appears to be the last game played by the Rosewood club & resulted in a convincing win despite ‘playing two men short’.

A further fixture was reported as planned in the local press for January 6th.1883 verses Heaton Association, but this appears to have not taken place & it has been confirmed that around this time the Rosewood club decided to join forces with East End &  together they became a stronger outfit, although initially the Rosewood line up virtually became the East End 2nd XI side for the remainder of the season. Broughton, Rowlands, Lightfoot, W.Wilson & in particular Charles Hiscock all made first team appearances for East End by the end of the season. The 1901 census shows that Charles who was born in Hants; remained in the Heaton area after retiring from playing & resided on Third Avenue employed as a superintendent. John Broughton was found in the 1881 census as a 16 year old brass finisher living on Byker Bank; having originated from Pontefract in South Yorkshire. John Rowlands resided in Parker Street, South Byker, which was very near to Stanley Street. In 1881 he was noted as a Newcastle born, boiler heater.

Rosewood Cricket- Summer 1883

Unusually, the Rosewood club carried on playing cricket during the summer of 1883. The scant information available on their activities that summer is as follows:

MAR.23rd.1883 (Away on Nuns Moor) v WESTFIELD, Lost by 2 Runs; 33 To 35.

JUN.12th.1883 v BRITANNIA, Won by 14 Runs; 52 To 38.

No player information is currently available.

The Newcastle East End club got two further injections of new blood later in the 1880’s in the form of the Cheviot & then Union Harriers Football Clubs. A future article will be devoted to these. Of the few known Rosewood cricketer’s, other than those that played football for the club; W, Blakey moved on to join the Marlborough Football Club. W. Peacock was later seen turning out for Heaton’s 3rd. Team & then Heaton Templars during the 1884-85 season.

HEATON ASSOCATION FOOTBALL & CRICKET CLUB

By the start of the 1882-83 season a number of the Stanley FC players had left the club prior to their first game under their new name East End & they had formed the Heaton Association Football Club as a new football side attached to their cricket club. I will now outline the clubs existence in a season by season

Before The Heaton Club decided to form a football club, they had been Cricket Club called Woodbine. Cricketers in the side included W. Chadwick J.Dixon & T.Watson who was likely Tom Watson East Ends future club secretary.
Their earliest action of the Woodbine Cricket Club was during the summer of 1881 when they were seen in the following two known matches:

WOODBINE CRICKET CLUB (Heaton)- Summer 1881

MAY 7th. v STANLEY, Lost Score not known.

AUG.7th. v STANLEY, Lost by 5 Runs; 53:58.
BATTING ORDER:
WOODBINE: J.T.HOBSON (1), W.WHEDDON (10), W.BAKER (0), T.INGO (0), A.LINDSAY (0), J.SPEIGHT (0), W.CHADWICK (2), R.TEMPLE (15), J.DIXON (10 not out), F.WARREN (1), T.WATSON (6). Extras- 8
.
W.BAKER Bowled out 3 Wickets, F.WARREN Bowled out 2 wickets & J.HOBSON Bowled out 1 Wicket.
STANLEY: W.A.COULSON (5), J.BELL (3), J.KELLY (0), W.BLACK (26), W.FINDLAY (5), J.ARMSTRONG (7), S.SHEEL (1), J.FENWICK (3), J.YOUNG (2 not out), R.FOSTER (2), J.SIMPSON (2). Extras- 2.
W.A.COULSON Bowled Out 4 Wickets, W.FINDLAY Bowled Out 2 Wickets & J.KELLY Bowled Out 1 wicket.

Cricket- Summer 1882

The summer of 1882 revealed a further two known matches:

MAY 13th. v STANLEY, Won by 9 Runs; 56:47.

JUN.3rd. (Away) v BEAUMONT, Lost by 17 runs; 58:75.

On August 28th1882 as the summer drew to a close, the Woodbine club announced that they had changed their name & were now called Heaton Association Football & Cricket Club. The football clubs Hon. Secretary was Thomas Liddle & the Treasurer was James Gladstone (Gledson). The Clubs first team captain for that season was John T. Hobson & the vice captain was James Henry. The clubs second team was captained by W.H.Wheddon , with vice captain being T.Harrison. The clubs committee was T.H.Wright, T.S.Phalp, D.Corbett & W.Chadwick. Heaton Association’s home was Heaton Junction, the ground which would later become the home of Newcastle East End.

Football- 1882-83 Season.

The clubs first ever game was on September 30th, when they beat local Newcastle side North Eastern’s second team 5:0. This late September first fixture was a week ahead of the Stanley who were announcing that they had changed their name to East End. Below are the known details of all the clubs matches that season:

1ST. TEAM:

SEP.30th.1882 (Away) v NORTH EASTERN 2nd XI, Won 5:0, Scorers: J.HOBSON (3), J.HENRY, T.PHALP.
It was noted that Heaton had the best of the play. Hobson who played in goal at first, scored the first  of three goals. The other scorers were Henry & Phalp.
HEATON: J.HOBSON (T.S.PHALP), J.DIXON, J.GLEDSON, W.MOORE, J.BELL, J.HENRY, PURDY, W.A.BETHELL, T.S. PHALP (J.HOBSON), T.LIDDLE, W.CHADWICK

The Heaton line up from this first ever football game is further evidence that the breakaway had occurred prior to the season getting underway. During those very early years, August & September were still very much cricket season months & the football season only began after this with that season’s football action throughout the country beginning early October. As the reader will see the club entered the Northumberland & Durham FA. 2nd Team Competition for the first time. In the Marlborough side was ex Rosewood cricketer W.Blakey.

HEATON: J.T.HOBSON, T.WATSON, J.DIXON, T.MELVIN, T.S.PHALP, R.TEMPLE, W.CHADWICK, T.LIDDLE, J.HENRY, W.A.BETHELL, J.GLEDSON.

At the beginning of the 1883-84 the newly formed Northumberland FA. held trial matches for selection to the county team. In recognition of the quality of some of the Heaton players, a number were selected to take part in these trial matches. They were held on September 22nd at the All Saints Ground on Bath Road. This first match was between a Colts ‘A’ & Colts ‘B’ eleven & resulted in a 2:0 win for the ‘A’s. Selected in their line up were Heaton’s J.DIXON, BB.THOMPSON & J.HENRY.  Both William & Robert Findlay of East End also featured. In the next match Colts ‘C’ v Colts ‘D’ Joseph Fenwick of East End featured & also Heaton’s JAMES BELL.

Football- 1884-85 Season

The club now changed their name to Heaton Athletic FC. That summer prior to the commencing of the new football season they announced their presence by holding a number of sports days.  The first of these Heaton Athletic Club Sports events  was held on May 10th.1884. Various members took part in the 100 yards Flat Race, including T.Liddle, J.Bell & J.T.Hobson was came 2nd in the final. On August 2nd they held another & in the 120 yards flat race, Sam Woods, J.T.Hobson, T.Barkas, R.Temple, T.Liddle & G.McKenzie all took part, along with East End players John Armstrong & W.Wilson. Their was also a 1 Mile Tricycle Race in which T.S.Phalp came 4th & J.T.Hobson 5th. On September 6th a further meeting was held by the club billed as their ‘Annual Sports Meeting’. The 100 Yard Race Heats included T.Liddle & R.Temple. The 220 Yards Flat Race saw J.Bell get to the final & he finished in 7th. place.

The football club continued to play their matches at the Heaton Junction ground. The clubs Hon. Secretary was now D. Lord & the first team captaincy had been taken over by George McKenzie. The Heaton area now had a newly formed club called Heaton Rovers & throughout the season a number of Heaton’s players were seen in their line ups. The known details of the Heaton clubs three sides that season are detailed below. It must be noted the club were now a fading force & results were poor. It appears they failed to enter any cup competitions that season. For brief period a club called Heaton Rovers came into existence. During that season, their side saw the odd appearance of  T.Liddle, Inglis, J.Rowat & Reader; all of who had featured for our Heaton club. The Heaton Rovers in ups also included Andrew Muir, brother of Heaton’s William Muir in his pre East End days.

Football- 1885-86 Season

Once again prior to the football season commencing the Heaton Athletic Club once again held a Club Sports Meeting. In was held on June 6th 1885 & completed on June 8th. The whole event was organised by Thomas S. Phalp. In the 110 Yards Flat Race R.Temple & J.T.Hobson took part along with Alec H. White, the East End captain. The Race Starter of the events was East Ends future trainer, William Bayles.

Both the Heaton Athletic Football Club & the newer side Heaton Rovers folded during that season. Heaton Athletic’s last known game was in December; ironically it was against Sunderland. Thus we can only assume that at some point around this time the club folded. Below are the only few results of games known to have been played by Heaton Athletic first team that season. The results were poor & of the 4 matches played 4, they lost all 4 & they failed to enter any cup competitions. (There is evidence that the second team folded first with a couple of early season planned fixtures cancelled as the club could get a side together).  By November it seems a number of players had already left the Heaton club & were playing for North Eastern. Namely, Chadwick the second team captain, Dobson & Henry.  North Eastern defeated the newly formed Gateshead 6:0 in November, with both Dobson & Henry getting a goal. In December J.Rowat had joined North Eastern’s second Team along with ex Stanley player R.Coulson. William Muir was now joining the East End ranks & on November 6th 1885 he got a county cap call up to play for Northumberland against Durham (Add score).

NOV.21st.1885 (Away) v SHANKHOUSE, Lost 0:4.

DEC.19th.1885 (Away) v SUNDERLAND, Lost 2(1) : 5(3). Th
is victory by an ever improving Sunderland side was noted as them having ‘completed a grand slam of victories over Tyneside clubs’.  It was noted that the game kicked off late due to the Heaton club arriving late & they played a lot of the game with a man short. This match seems to have brought an end to the Heaton club as I can no further evidence that the club played any more games after this date.

Of all the Heaton clubs players, it is perhaps the career of JAMES BELL, which makes the most remarkable reading. Having been with Stanley’s second team, he had been one of those who left to join Heaton on mass in 1882. He featured for both the football clubs first team & the cricket team. He also noted as an excellent sprinter & entered the clubs sports days’ events. He left Heaton prior to it folding of the club joining Wearmouth FC. During his last season with Heaton (1883-84, Bell was selected to feature in a Northumberland County Trial match on September 22nd; & he featured for a Colts ‘D’ side which played  the ‘C’s. Bell only played for Wearmouth briefly & soon after he was playing for Sunderland AFC Reserves & also the Sunderland cricket team. He also turned out for Whitburn FC & was selected to play cricket at county level on a number of occasions for Durham County. Further research will hopefully facilitate the development of a comprehensive player profile of Bell. (A full pen picture of Bell is to be added in the future). SAM WOODS would also go onto a long a fruitful career on both the football field & as a cricketer. His profile will also be included in future article, detailing his involvement with both the West End & East End clubs & also other clubs such as Elswick Leather Works & Rendel.
