1879-80 SEASON

Prior to the formation our local football association, players from the Tyne Association club were instrumental in arranging the areas first ever representative XI match. This took place on January 1880, when a Newcastle & District XI played a ‘Scottish/Canadian XI. Alfred Harrison was one the main driving forces in arranging the game. He would soon chair a meeting at the Turks Head Hotel, Newcastle to form the Northumberland & Durham FA & was elected as their secretary. The match itself helped promote the association rules games popularity on Tyneside.  Below are details of this first ever Representative match on Tyneside. (* Highlighted players, also played at some point for Newcastle Rangers, East End, West End, Heaton, Cheviot or White Rose)

The history of County football for both the County’s Northumberland & Durham began as an combined association in 1881.With association rules football in its infancy, for the first two seasons they selected players from club sides in both counties to form a Northumberland & Durham County XI. Attempts at organising a trial match in January were hampered by bad weather. Despite selection for their first ever match went ahead & it took place on February 5th 1881. They suffered a 10;0 drubbing against Cleveland. A return match was organised on March 19th 1881 against Cleveland & this time they won 2 : 1(+1 Disputed goal).
