NEWCASTLE RANGERS

Newcastle Rangers hold a special place in the history of Association Football in the North East, as they were the very first club to play their home games at St. James Park. This section gives a short history of this club, whose brief existence was enough to establish St. James Park as a football venue.

1879-80 SEASON

Although formed in 1878, currently their earliest known football match comes from the following 1879-80 season. During that season the club was mostly referred to as Rangers (Association) or Rangers (Gateshead). However, once established at St. James Park during the following season they were referred to as Newcastle Rangers from then on. Prior to this and during the 1879-80 season, their home ground was the Army Drill Field, Alexandra Road, Gateshead. Below are their two friendly football matches, known to have taken place that season. It may be that further research in the future will reveal more details from that season. The away match at nearby North Durham Rugby Club, playing them with the ‘Association Rules’ on January 3rd. 1880 is the earliest known result & team line up for the club. However, a club meeting refers to matches prior to this which at present whose details remain lost. The gap between the skill level in the North East compared to Scotland can clearly be seen in the clubs record defeat of 8:0 against Glasgow side Athole.

1880-81 SEASON

On Friday September 23rd. 1880, the Newcastle Rangers were noted in the local press as holding their Annual Meeting.
Held at the Turf Hotel, Collingwood Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne; the meeting was chaired by William Simms (Club Captain).
Officials were elected at the meeting & the clubs Honorary Secretary became Robert Stewart Bain, with a committee of T.Kent, J.W.Wakinshaw & F.S.Scott. Club President at the meeting was Sir Henry Clavering Bart.  It was at the meeting that it was decided that after having played their previous two seasons on the Army Drill Field, Alexandra Road, Gateshead, that the club would ‘Move to an enclosure off the West turnpike at Graingerville, Newcastle. This venue off Leazes Terrace was the setting of their Inaugurate Game on October 18th. 1880. It was a practice match between the Newcastle Rangers . first team & 15 others. A local match report showed that game, which was the first ever game of football at St. James Park; was 2 hours in duration & was won by the first team 6:1. A brief description of the ground was also given, noting it was ‘nicely situated close to the town & was 120 yards by 60 yards in size’.

Below is a brief listing of the known matches played by Newcastle Rangers, beginning with the home matches at St. James Park;
(although prior to this on September 25th they possibly played a further friendly on the Old Drill Field in Gateshead).

1883-84 SEASON

That Season Newcastle Rangers remained at the Byker ground through the season. They reached the final of the newly created Northumberland FA. Senior Cup, but lost out to rivals Tyne Association. Previously the Northumberland & Durham FA’s had been one organisation with one trophy. Below are the games that are known to have been played that season by Newcastle Rangers; noting that a fixture was also planned on November 17th, against Jesmond. However, only 7 Newcastle Rangers players turned & thus it did not go ahead.  Two players shared the captainship of the first team; namely J.A.Lockhead & J.Hetherington. The second team had Y.Rule as captain, while the third’s seem to have been disbanded at some point during the season. A measure of the clubs standing locally can be seen by the fact that when selecting players for the Northumberland County side in trial matches; the opposition for the Colts XI that season was Newcastle Rangers. The club ran a 3rd team that season captained by Black. After the season had ended the club held its Annual General Meeting on May 22nd. The club was noted as being ‘in a healthy  state’. The Committee of the club consisted of David Crawford, George Hall, Thomas Morpeth, J.R.Douglass, J.Hetherington, W.Y.Rule, & J.Phillips (Northumberland FA. Representative). Club Secretary & Treasurer was F.W. Hardy. J.A..Lockhead was voted to continue as club captain, with A.H. White as vice captain.

1884-85 SEASON

That Seasons activities for the club kicked off during the summer, with their participation in the Town Moor Temperance Festival Football Competition; in which they featured in 2 matches. The club now returned to St. James Park, often referred to as ‘The Leazes’; in what was to be their final season, with the local younger clubs such as East End & West End, now proving to be much stronger sides than themselves. Their seasons activities got underway in September as usual but after only 4 games before disbanding. It was not until the following the following summer on August 9th. 1885 that F.W.Hardy announced officially that the ‘Late’ Newcastle Rangers Football Club, which had wounded up its affairs; had a financial balance of one guinea after winding up their affairs. From the ashes of this club after October it seems many of the players regrouped across the river in Gateshead & in December 1884 Gateshead Association was formed, playing back at their old Drill Field Ground, Alexandra Road. These players included such influences as Thomas Morpeth & William Simm, William Y.Rule & John R.Douglas.  For the record, below are those few games played by Newcastle Rangers before they folded; noting that only first team fixtures were played, under the captainship of John R.Douglas

OCT.4th.1884 v MIDDLESBROUGH ST. JOHNS   (HOME?), Lost 0:1,
Friendly Challenge Match. This match appears to be the last play by Newcastle Rangers & they folded soon after. However by December 1884, many of the players had regrouped to form Gateshead Association. This club played its first ever game on December 13th. back on the Army Drill Field, Alexander Rd, Gateshead. Gateshead's line up would include; JOHN R.DOUGLASS, WILLIAM SIMM, WILLIAM Y.RULE, GEORGE CARR, J.D.WARDALE & JAMES HETHERINGTON. Gateshead Association became relatively successful as the decade progressed but then went into decline & they folded in 1890. However, being a new club; they are not included in this study.

1885-86 SEASON

Although another local short lived club took the name Newcastle Rangers; that is not the whole story of the original Newcastle Rangers Football Club. On April 24th. 1886, they reformed to play in a ‘Veterans Match’ for Medical Charities. Below are the known details from this ‘reunion’ game; in which they were noted as playing in ‘Dark Blue’.

During his extensive sporting career John Edward Shilton, first tried his hand at football with Newcastle Rangers during the 1883-84 season.  He made 1 cup & 4 friendly first team appearances for the Newcastle Rangers first team during the 1883-84 season. He featured both in goal & as an outfield player. He scored a goal in the cup game, which was a 1St. Round tie of the Northumberland & Durham FA. Cup on December 1st; in a game which Rangers were 6:0 convincing winners over Heaton. The team line up listed him as goalkeeper. His actual debut for them was earlier in the season on October 20th. in a friendly 1:0 win over Sunderland & he scored the only goal of the game, playing as a half back. The cup game was his last match for Newcastle Rangers & his sporting career was predominantly a cricketing one. His career spanned one & half decades at the high level. In 1882 he made one county level appearance for Durham. This was on July 3rd against Northumberland. He assisted in their victory by claiming 11 wickets. Shilton had came to the North of England through his enlisting into the army. This had been as a young teenager in 1876 when he signed up as a Bugler & Drummer Boy. Initially he was stationed at Carlisle & then moved with the 55th. Regiment to Gosport. In 1878 he headed South with them to Portsmouth & was noted as playing cricket in the Southern Division playing for Hythe. Information from those long gone days is very scant, however John kept a diary & recorded one match against Sweage & Lydd on May 30th. 1879, in which he hit 8 not out in bat. Later that summer on June 26th. he records a win over Shorncliffe in which he bowled out 5 for 42. Throughout the summers of 1880 & 1881 he remained with regiment & played for both them & Shorncliffe & occasionally for Hythe, In July 1881 Shilton left the army & settled near Barnsley were he married. However he had become a professional cricketer in the North East by 1882.  He was first seen turning out for Sunderland Cricket Club during the summer of 1882 on July 15th. 1882, He hit 8 runs in the sides 75 To 40 defeat to Darlington. A week later although he did not get to bat, he fielded for Sunderland in their 141 to 57 runs defeat to the Northumberland Club. On July 29th they fared better beating Tynemouth 72 to 42 runs & Shilton hit 16 not out. He also bowled out 3 wickets for 12 runs. On August 27th. he hit another 10 runs in 205 to 69 victory over Darlington. He also took 1 wicket for 13. After also playing for Durham County at  the end of that summer he was selected to play for a North of England XI side against Roxburgh County. They won 114 To 81 & then 67 to 39 runs in the 2nd innings. He hit 7 runs in the first & 5 in the second. His Durham County appearance had been on July 3rd against Northumberland.

A year later, while playing for the Northumberland Club side, he was selected to play in a representative match for the Colts of the North against the South on May 3rd. On June 22nd he got to then play once for his native Yorkshire against Leicestershire. During the following summer of 1884 he then featured for Northumberland County on 4 occasions & was also selected for a North XI, which played the South on June 2nd. It was in 1885 that he moved south & began an illustrious career with first class county side Warwickshire. He played for them on June 1st 1885 against Birmingham in what would be the first of 147 appearances in the side at county level; many of which were at first class level. His debut was an impressive one & he bowled out 7 for only 14 runs in the first innings. His club side at this point were Bradford & he claimed over 200 wickets for them as a professional. It is noted that his claim to be from Warkwickshire was actually false but he certainly became a loyal servant to the county side.   However from 1884 to 1885 Shilton also played Rugby for Batley Carr Trinity. On the cricket pitch he was selected for a North XI that played the South (Which included W.G. Grace) on June 2nd.1884. the lost but he did manage to take a wicket. During the summers of 1885 & 1886 he featured a few times for the Liverpool club. On August 9th. 1886, Warkwickshire took on the touring Australians & in typical style they very well in this match, but it failed to conclude due to rain. Later that summer on September 24th Shilton was selected to feature in an England XI against Australians & his was an other pinnacle in his playing career. At this point in his life he was also the clubs ground keeper out of season and featured for Mosley rugby club during 1886-87 season. Unfortunately off the field things first took a turn for the worse and the first evidence of drink problems emerged & he was declared bankrupt in the May. A tragedy also beset the family when his youngest daughter died in October 1887 & his borrowing problem further escalated. In 1887 Shilton had return North & played for a Newcastle Upon Tyne XI against Shrewsbury on August 4th. & this would be last showing for a club from the area.

His Warkwickshire county cricket career carried on & on June 18th 1888 he was selected again for an England XI which played the Australians. . Other prominent fixtures he played in around this period, included a Midland Counties XI in 1886 & a G.A. Lohmann’s XI against L.Hall XI  in 1889. During the 1888 & 1889 summer he also featured for the Warwickshire club side & then from 1889 to 1891 for the West Bromwich Dartmouth side. It was during this period that he became involved with West Brom football Club as an umpire and referee, but there was questions asked about some of the decisions he made. On May 4th he put together a J.E. Shilton XI side that played a H.J.Pallett’s XI as a county trial match & featured in none match captain of a side called Montgomery playing against Warkwickshire club side. At this point the Warkwickshire County team were second lass however they won the championship in 1889 but slipped to 6th in 1890. In his clubs season in 1890 with Dartmouth was very successful & they claimed the league title for the first time.

In 1891 his county career switched briefly to Worcestershire when he featured in two friendly matches, before resuming his Warwickshire career. During the 1891-92 season Shilton made a fleeting return to the football scene. Here he deputised for his West Brom side who were short of players on two occasions. The first was in September when they defeated Northwich Victoria 5:0 playing as a winger; & then on December 29th he played at left back in a 2;0 victory over Kettering town. He was noted as playing ‘a rattling good game’. In 1893 he was also still playing for club side Dudley. Prior to this on September 5th 1892, he featured in a West v East first class match. On August 21st 1893 he also played for a 2nd Class Counties XI against the Australians. Shilton was now once again a publican in the Dudley area & this appears to have eventually been his downfall & his married became fraught with problems & it is noted that his health was also suffering. His relationship with Warkwickshire was becoming strained his application for a benefit match in 1894 was declined. 1894 also saw Warkwickshire progress to play first class cricket which helped get Shilton’s life back on the rails briefly before he returned to being a publican. The county side had a great summer & a run of 10 successive victories helped them win the championship. His club carer continued but his appearances were less regular. In 1895 bronchial problems became more an issue but he still managed to turn out On June 27th 1895 he was finally awarded a benefit match with club recognising that his debt problems were getting out of control.  The money from this only stalled a culminating court appearance, which led to him being deported to Cape Town in South Africa to do 12 months hard labour. During his time there in April 1897 he took part in a prison officers verses an eleven from the De Beers Mining Company.  Shilton return to England following the completion of his sentence & he settled in Sedbergh. Here he signed up as professional player & coach in 1898; assisting them to a successful season. He also coached at the local school. Unfortunately his marital discourse & drinking additions became more fractious & he was now sadly noted as ‘bad tempered’. The money problems & mental instability finally took it its toll & he died on September 27th. 1899; just five days short of his 38th birthday. On October 6th. he was buried in the New Cemetery in Sedbergh, bringing to an end his short but incredibly colourful career & life which ended so unhappily, with his long suffering wife refusing have his name uttered in the household. This short article can no way do just in detail to his life & excellent biography of his life can still be found in second hand bookshops entitled “John  Edward Shilton’s Book: Triumphs & Disasters of a Warkwickshire Cricketer by Robert Brooke. The Warkwickshire county club themselves also have more detailed information on his playing career.
