NEWCASTLE WEST END:  PRE ST. JAMES PARK ERA –

PART ONE SUMMER 1881 To SUMMER 1884

INTRODUCTION

With Newcastle Rangers folded & St. James Park now a vacant football ground, it was not long before a new club took up the opportunity to make the ground their home. The club which seized that opportunity was Newcastle West End in the mid 1880’s. It seems only fair, to give this fine club a worthy testimony to its time in existence; that research has been done on the clubs pre St. James Park era.

WEST END CLUB ORIGINS – CROWN CRICKET CLUB & WEST END JUNIORS CRICKET CLUB: SUMMERS 1881 & 1882

To the West of Newcastle’s city centre in the Elswick area a cricket club called ‘Crown Cricket Club were formed in 1881. The 1897 Reid’s map of the city shows the area of the city where Crown Street was next to Elswick Park. It is likely that their earliest matches were played in the park. Other clubs in the nearby streets also formed cricket & football clubs around this time. Two examples being Grove & Malvern. Only one Crown cricket match from that summer & is detailed below:

AUG.4th.1881, Away ‘v’ REDHEUGH STAR, Lost by 4 Runs, 34 To 38. Sadly no team line ups are known.

WEST END JUNIORS ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB-    1882-83 SEASON

In August 1882 members of the West End Juniors Cricket Club met & made the decision to form a cricket club. At this meeting Joseph A. It was against Rosewood during their brief existence before they amalgamated with East End. The term ‘juniors;’ referred to small often new clubs in those days & did not necessary reflect the age group of players. 1 Cup match in February & 12 Friendly challenge matches are known to have been played which will now be detailed, including all known team line ups.
