St. James Park 1938 To 1940 & the advent of World War II....

ST. JAMES PARK  1938-39 SEASON REVIEW

In the season before & the season that led into World War II there were less other matches, especially during the 1939-40 season. During the 1938-39 season; aside from Newcastle first team & other sides; St. James Park was the scene of various other matches throughout the 1938-39 season. However, in this season prior to the beginning of World War II, there was still less use of St, James Park that season, than had been seen in recent years.  The most prestigious event of the 1938-39 season was the hosting of a full England international against Norway in November. The ground also played host to the final of the Northumberland Senior Cup & Newcastle Dispensary Cup that season. The clubs accounts at the end of the season also showed an unusual expenditure during the 1938-39 season; with the purchase of a ‘Tent for the Ground’ costing £3559 14s. This was possibly a tent like covering for the pitch to be used in cold weather. The Groundsman that season continued to be Sandy Mutch & the entry charge for men in the 1938-39 season was 6d.

The 1939-40 season had began like any other, but the invasion of Germany into Poland on September 1st. & the annexing of Czechoslovakia  & Austria led to Britain & France two days later declaring war. The advent of World War II, led to the abandoning of the all English League fixtures, after the matches that took place on September 2nd. The war had the effect t of reducing the number of NUFC, St. James Park’s matches that season. In fact there were only 5 non Newcastle (at any level) matches that season played at St. James Park during the 1939-40 season. There was no Northumberland Senior Cup Final at the ground that season.
