PLAYER PROFILE

Robert Thornton Young began his football career with local Durham side Brancepeth Villa. His next club in his teens was Esh Winning Rangers.  It was here that his talents were spotted by Sunderland. They took him as an amateur in February 1913 & a month later he became a professional. Competition for a place in the side was fierce & it was not until near the end of the 1914/15 season that he gained his first team debut; after making a favourable impression for Sunderland reserves. His season with reserves had seem him feature in 12 known North Eastern League appearances beginning on September 12th in a 3:3 draw with Darlington. The last of the appearances was on April 24th when they lost to Houghton Rovers 1:0 & they ended the season strongly in the league (Actual league position to be confirmed). The reserves had a great run in the Durham FA. Senior Cup & Young featured in the 2nd Round 5:2 victory over Hartlepool United on February 27th & then in the semi final 4:0 win over Southwick on March 6th. The final took place on April 3rd & they defeated Darlington 2:0. He very likely took part in the game, bit It is be confirmed. His call up to the first team came in his familiar left back role, in a Division I fixture against Bradford City on April 10th & the game ended in a 1:1. Soon after the Great War halted the football league programme & Bob Young’s playing career, like many of his contemporaries, was put on hold.

During the first season of wartime football, 1915-16 Young was not seen playing in any Sunderland line ups. However, he was one of the defenders in a George Holley’s XI who played against William Hogg’s side on February 19th.1916. The score from the game is not known. Robert Young’s military involvement now saw him in the thick of the action & on December 10th 1916 for his heroics in a battle at Cambrin; he was awarded the Military Medal, but he was wounded. On recovering, Young’s service action switched to England this allowed hin to engage himself with local amateur side Aviation Athletic. They played in the Newcastle & District United League during the 1917-18 season. Young got his first run out of 11 known league appearances as team captain for them on September 2nd. 1917 when they lost 3:0 to Newcastle’s newly formed Swifts side. Results fluctuated a great deal, although they did get a 7:0 win over Hebburn Caledonians on Dec.8th. His last known involvement seems to have been on February 23rd. 1918 when they lost 4:2 to Munitions United. With the war over in 1918 & servicemen began getting demobbed, Young was reunited with his Sunderland colleagues. During the hastily arranged Northern Victory League campaign, which began in January 1919, Bob was referred to as Sergeant Young. He featured in 9 of their 14 league matches at left back, beginning with the opening 1:0 defeat to Durham City & culminating in the final game when they beat Durham 2:0 on April 22nd. The result saw them complete their fixtures in second place; runners up to Middlesbrough. His appearances included a 2:1 win over Newcastle on March 22nd. The side also played in the reinstated Durham FA. Senior Cup & Bob is known to have played in the 2nd. Round 1:1 draw with South Shields on March 29th. & in the final on May 3rd when they thrashed Crook 8:0. At the end of the 1918-19 season on May 24th. He was once again seen in football action. Here Young was in a Frank Cuggy defence playing alongside Hobson against a Bill McCracken XI. They lost 1:0 in a match was for the benefit of J. H. Glover’s memorial fund. During those later stages of the season Sunderland also engaged in a number of friendly games & Young featured in 2 of these. On March 8th, when they beat Southwick 2:0 & then on April 26th; when they lost 3:2 to Third Lanark. With the Great War over Of regular football fixtures resumed, Young continued to remain wit his club Sunderland.

The 1919-20 season was Bob Young’s best for Sunderland. Prior to his action with then he was involved on August 23rd.1919 he was selected to play for a Rest of the League XI against South Shields, & they lost 2:0. It was October 4th when he got his first senior start of the season, in a 3:1 win over Everton. From this point he featured in the majority of the sides Division I matches; clocking up 24 league appearances with side completing the season in 5th. place. In addition to them he also played in their FA. Cup games, which began on January 14th with a 1st. Round 6:2 convincing win over Hull City. After Burnley took them to a replay on February 21st which they won 2:0; Sunderland then faced Aston Villa in the 3rd. Round & lost out 1:0. The following season saw Bob add a further 10 Division I appearances to his tally, beginning with the sides 2:1 defeat to Middlesbrough & his last being January 22nd when they beat Liverpool 2:1. At the end of the season on May 4th. Young was selected to feature in a Players Union XI side. This was against a N.E. District XI & they lost 1:0. Earlier in the season Young also refereed a match at St. James Park between Annfield Plain , the ‘Northern Alliance Champions’ & ‘The Rest’. Competition for his place intensified, & he became more a back up than first choice at left back, with Ernie England more often than not being the first choice. He is only known to have appeared for the reserves in 3 North Eastern League games that season. However he was in the semi final of the Durham Senior Cup side on March 5th when they lost 2:1 to Leadgate Park. During the 1921-22 season Bob Young still made 7 Division I appearances. Prior to the season commencing he also featured in a practice match at Roker Park on August 15th. playing for a Whites XI in a 2:2 draw with the Stripes. The first of his Division I appearances that season was on October 8th when Sunderland beat Arsenal 1:0 & the last was on February 4th when they lost 2:0 to Aston Villa. Young assisted Sunderland’s reserves as their captain that season in their North Eastern campaign, with his first outing being on September 10th on a 0:0 draw with Wallsend. In total he is known to have featured in at least 10 of their league games, culminating in a 1:0 win over Bedlington United on April 29th & the side ending the season 8th. place. He also featured in Durham Senior Cup action against Jarrow in December, when they won after a replay 4:1; & a Sunderland Ship Owners Cup 3rd Round Replay 1:0 win over Middlesbrough Reserves on March 15th.

His Sunderland career during the 1922-23 season was now primarily with the reserves & he only got 2 run outs in the first team; February 17th. in a 0:0 draw with Oldham Athletic & then on May 5th when they lost 1:0 to Aston Villa. For the reserves, he featured in at least 12 of their league matches, beginning on August 26th with 2:1 win over Blyth Spartans. His final outing in the side that season was April 28th when they clinched 3rd place with 1:0 win over Seaton Deleval. He also featured in the sides Durham Senior Cup run & is known to have played in both a 4:0 win over Houghton on January 12th in a early round & in the semi final 5:1 victory over Durham City Reserves on March 24th.1923. He then took to the field in his usual left back place in the final on April 23rd when they defeated Shildon 1:0. His contributions at reserve level were rewarded with his selection to play in a North Eastern League XI on February 3rd. This was against a Central League XI & the match was played at St. James Park; with Young’s side winning 4:0. At the start of the next season following a practice match appearance on August 18th for the Whites in a 1:1 draw with the Stripes; Young got a short-term return to 1st. team action & he featured in 4 matches. The first of these 4 games was on September 1st when they defeated West Ham 1:0 & the last was on October 6th in a 2:2 draw with October 6th. He then returned to reserve level football, having already been involved in their opening 2:0 win over Wallsend on August 26th. In his next reserve game he scored a rare goal in the sides 2:0 over Jarrow. His last known reserve action was on April 5th when they lost 2:0 to Workington, bringing his known tally that season to 18 league games. The side completed their fixtures in 4th. place. One of his known reserve cup appearances that season was to feature in a 7:0 victory over Durham City Reserves in a Durham Senior Cup 1st Rd match on December 22nd. At the end of the 1923-24 season Jack Scott was given a benefit match at Sunderland on April 23rd.1924. Young featured in the game, playing in a William Hogg XI which defeated Sunderland Past & Rest XI, 2:1. William Hogg was an ex Sunderland player who had been a World War I Guest player for Newcastle.

Young’s Sunderland reserve side had a very successful North Eastern League campaign during the 1924-25 season, which culminated in them winning the championship. Bob is known have played in at least 21 of the fixtures, beginning with a 3:0 win over Newcastle on August 30th. He claimed another goal during the campaign as well, scoring on March 14th in a 3:0 win over Bedlington United. Their league programme was completed on May 2nd.1925 with 2:0 victory over Workington; giving them 61 points. Further Durham Senior Cup success was also achieved by Bob & the reserves that season. Their campaign began on December 20th with a 2:1 win over Chester-Le-Street & on February 21st. he was in the side that hammered White-Le-Head 8:0 in the 3rd Round. In the semi final on March 21st they defeated Wood Skinners 2:0 & then faced Chilton RA. in the final on April 11th. Captain Young saw his side held to a 1:1 draw, but in the replay on April 14th they were victorious with a 1:0 win  On the first team front, this season would sadly be the last for Bob. He featured only twice; once in a 3:0 league defeat to Bury on November 8th. & once in an FA. Cup 2:1 defeat to Everton on February 4th.1925. This game would be Bob’s final senior appearance at Sunderland & after a further few season with reserves he retired as a player. That summer on June 17th Young was selected to play in Charlie Buchan XI in cricket match against Ryton Cricket Club. In the match which ended in a draw in bowled out one wickets for runs & in bat scored a single run. Season 1925-26 saw Bob continue to feature regular at reserve level & the side had another strong North Eastern League campaign. He featured in at least 17 of their fixtures beginning with 3:0 win over Middlesbrough on August 29th. The side recorded an amazing 14:0 demolition of Hartlepool reserves on September 5th. Gurney scored 9 alone, but Bob did not get on the score sheet. His last known outing in the side that season was April 3rd when they lost 2:1 to Newcastle. His side ended the league programme as runners up to Newcastle. To date the only reserve cup involvement I can find him involved in that season was on January 23rd when they defeated Jarrow 6:1 in the 2nd Round of the Durham Senior Cup.  Even competition for a full back place in reserves now became an issue for veteran Young, with players such as Lloyd & Dow challenging to play. At the end of the 1925-26 he took part in an unemployed fund raising match which involved many Newcastle players. The game took place on April 29th at Wallsend. It was between a Hughie Gallagher XI & William Cowan’s XI & it ended in a 2:2 draw. Young of Sunderland played in the defence of the Cowan XI & scored their second goal, a feat he did not manage at senior level as an out & out full back at left back.

North Eastern League side Bedlington United had a left back referred to as R. Young during the 1928-29, but it is not known if this was our player or another & further research is required to determine this.

In July 1927, Robert Young was appointed as Norwich City’s Trainer & he would remain in post through to February 1937 when he became their manager. His first season in command at Norwich saw the side end their Division II Campaign in 17th. place. Season 1937-38 would be his first full season in charge & he guided them to an improved 14th. place finish. He continued to manage side through to December 31st. 1938  but he then stepped down, with side finally finishing second bottom in the league table. The 1939-40 had barely got underway when World War II led to the suspension of the league programme. Throughout the war years up until 1945 he remained in post. They  took part in the War League South Group D during the 1939-40 season 7 finished in 8th. place. In the Football War League South the following season they reached 7th. place. Season 1941-42 was Norwich’s best & they improved their form further under Young’s guidance to reach 4th. place. Unfortunately to date I have been unable to find the clubs war league form for the remainder of the war, however this will be added as soon as possible. During the war Bob also worked for Norwich Corporation Councils Treasury Department. Then after the war he became a public house landlord. Young’s competitive managerial record, excluding the war years is; 103 matches of which 33 were won & 18 drew.
Robert Young continued to reside in the Norwich area until his death in September 1960.
